My (28F) boyfriend (31M) wants to break up after 3 years because of his family’s feng shui master advice

r/

I’m 28F and my boyfriend is 31M. We’ve been together for 3 years. We’re both Chinese-Indonesian (Chindo).

Recently, he consulted to his family long-trusted feng shui master, who is also my bf’s godfather for ideal year to get married. After checking our Chinese zodiacs (I’m a Fire Ox, he’s a Wood Dog), his godfather said we’re extremely incompatible.

According to his godfather, there’s only a 40% chance we won’t end up divorced. He even warned that if we stay together regardless, we’ll constantly argue, face bad luck, and possibly end up dirt poor. He also told my bf that all this will cause more harm to my life much more than his.

Now my boyfriend wants to end the relationship, not because he stopped loving me, but because he and his family truly trust and relied on this fengshui master. They believe everything he predicts are always accurate and his extended family were the proofs. He doesn’t want to ruin my life.

I’m heartbroken and torn. I don’t know how to respond to something like this. I don’t really believe in this kind of extreme feng shui. I respect tradition and culture, but I personally take superstition with a grain of salt. It hurts to think that three years of love, trust, and effort can be dismissed over a prediction.

Has anyone gone through something similar, especially in a Chindo family setting? I’m not sure whether to fight for this or let it go.

Any advice would be appreciated!

This is about as respectable as horoscopes. I’d dump anyone who truly believes in magic or the supernatural

And I always thought feng shui was just about how to arrange the furniture. It’ll take a lot to sway such deeply held religious beliefs.

Let your boyfriend end the relationship if that is what he wants, take the time you need to grieve it, and let this be a learning experience to not pick another partner whose beliefs differ so much from your own.

It doesn’t really matter if feng shui is real or not. What matters is that your boyfriend believes in it enough to let it dictate his love life or at the very least puts enough weight on his family’s belief in it to let that dictate it. You don’t stand a chance at the face of something like that no matter if you share his beliefs or not.

You and your boyfriend are indeed not compatible. Not because some feng shui master says it, but because this is only a small taste of what the rest of your lives would be like even if you did somehow manage to talk your boyfriend into continuing the relationship.

With this much fallout over something so simple as your potential wedding year, imagine what you migt have to deal with in the future if your boyfriend were to go to a feng shui master about matters relating to your finances, your potential children, and so on and so forth. Would you really want to deal with that, especially considering that you don’t believe in this kind of thing yourself?

First of all, this stuff is hokey bullshit. Second of all, say it’s all true and there’s only a forty percent chance you won’t divorce. Since half of ALL marriages end in divorce, your odds aren’t even that bad in comparison lmao. But yeah anyone who believes in this stuff to this extent would be a deal breaker for me.

Friend of mine was in similar situation. His gf parents got a reading from some kind of temple and the reading said they aren’t a match. The girl parents told her to break up.

The girl break up with him but they’re still seeing each others. At first the parents relented but then they ask for reading again the next year and it comes up the same. He’s still trying to make the relationship work, even talked to his gf’s mum. But she’s literally flat out lying that she didn’t ask her daughter to break up and told him that everything is her daughter’s decision. He got pissed and cut contact with her

The girl is currently a single mom with 2 kids. No idea what happened why she got divorced, my friend said probably it’s because her parents interfering with her marriage.

You respond the only way a reasonable person CAN respond to this madness. “If you want to throw away our relationship and everything you know about me, because of a prediction made by someone who could not possibly know the future, then you aren’t the right person for me anyway. I don’t want to marry someone who is so easily swayed. I thought we had something solid, but if you would throw it all away over some fortune teller’s prediction, then maybe I’ve been wrong about you.”

Honestly if he really feels this way breaking up is better FOR YOU. Do not fight for this. You should NEVER have to fight or beg someone to stay with you. If he’s foolish enough to listen to this person over his OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE you’re probably better off not hitching your life to his, honestly.
