Hello everyone! Location: Amarillo, Texas!
This situation is kind of crazy, and I do want to clarify that this was my first time renting an apartment, and I’ve learned from the mistakes I made, and I know a lot of this could be my fault!
Long story short, I found a singular bed bug in my bed the other day, and as I was reaching for a ziploc bag to put it in to show maintenance, I saw maggots crawling underneath my kitchen window. 2 nasty issues in one day.
I told the office about it, and that I wanted to move out. They told me that 1. They would call pest control on Thursday the 10th, and I didn’t receive any phone calls or emails, so I went in person on the 11th, and asked again about pest control, and they told me they forgot and would do it Monday morning, the 14th. 2. They told me a unit in my building had been evicted and they had left the unit a MESS. Roaches, bed bugs, maggots in the kitchen, so basically alllll of these had migrated into my unit as well. None of this conversation was documented though.
It’s now the 18th, I emailed them on the 15th, and they responded very pettily and said they were understaffed and didn’t prioritize it, again. Haven’t heard a peep since then.
Obviously, I checked my bed, my bedroom, cleared it of EVERYTHING, and found nothing. I didn’t find any poop, not another bed bug, nothing. I have been sleeping in my living room on an air mattress.
It’s just ridiculous that it’s been a week and a half, and nothing has been done about this.
Quite a few people are urging me to take legal action because they’ve already been very neglectful with other issues the last 2 years. We’ve put in multiple work orders for our dishwasher (it broke in 2023), never been fixed. We put in at least a dozen for our air conditioner, some in 2023, and some in 2024 because it broke both years at the same time, and it took them 3 months EACH year to fix it.
However, I haven’t had an active lease since March 2024. I had been planning to move states, so we asked if we could do a 3 month lease, and they gave a month by month, and I completely forgot about it. So if they want to use the lease against us, we haven’t had an active one in over a year, and if we wanted to use the lease against them, they haven’t had to follow it in over a year! I could be COMPLETELY wrong about that, but I’m just unsure. I also never turned in the paper that stated everything wrong with the apartment BEFORE we moved in. I didn’t understand how important that was. Didn’t take any pictures either. So technically, since all of this is just my word, no documentation other than work orders, it would technically not do any good for me right? And since it’s not a full blown infestation or anything, it’s not like they NEED to provide me with another unit to stay in?
