My dad put me in debt using my name and social on an eBay account

In 2022 my dad opened an eBay account using my name and SSN when I was 17. I gave him permission but I didn’t realize how big of a deal this would be now that I am 20 and starting my life. He made 27K in 2023, 89K in 2024 and I’m not even sure what he’s going to make off of it this year.

My tax advisor said I need to 1099 him and pull the plug on the eBay account immediately so this can’t go any further. Not sure if I can delete the account without causing a family feud considering I still live at home.

My dad does not want to delete the eBay as he has all of these good reviews and doesn’t want to start over.

I’m only 20 and I don’t know what to do. He never filed the taxes for the eBay and now that I am doing it all by myself, he’s not going to pay anything. I feel as though I cannot go after him legally and honestly I really don’t want to cause an even bigger problem. What should I do in this situation?

Contact the IRS ans explain the situation. Keep texts between your father and yourself about the situation as proof of what he has done. This is not the first time the IRS has encountered a parent fraudulently using their child’s SSN and refusing to pay the tax debt

Contact ebay and tell them the situation. They may accept your proof and change the account details / suspend the account.

I’m not sure what kind of father puts their tax liability on their kid. What the f is going on?!

Have you tried an ultimatum? Pay the taxes or it gets shut down (and include a due date). This financial abuse of his own child shows how little he is watching out for you and you need to look for your own place asap. Find some roommates if needed. Also, have you checked your credit? Is there anything else he has done with your SS? Credit cards? Loans? Lock that baby down – it’s really simple to do online – before you have the discussion to get ahead of any retaliation. Sorry this is happening. And I hope things work out.

Woah. Your tax advisor is right, and is looking out for you. You need to confront your dad and share what your advisor said.

That’s rough for your dad, too. I see why he’d want to keep all those reviews. If you were to allow him to keep running that account, then you’d need to be mega strict about 1099ing him every year though. And it’ll be more work for you. And he’ll be responsible for the taxes.

Overall not a sustainable long term thing imo. Maybe your dad could work with eBay to change the underlying acccount details. That seems like the only possible win win.
