My Dad Will Only Express Himself Through Text

r/

Exactly what the title says.

My (F24) dad (M60) cannot communicate his feelings in person. He will only text these loooonnnggg texts about how he should be a better father, he’s proud of me, anything under the sun. Which would be completely different if I didn’t live with him and that was his only way get in contact with me.

He takes the time in the text to revisit what he’s done “wrong” in the past week or so… sometimes they also include that him and my mom love me unconditionally (though in real life it’s “unconditionally with conditions”, yknow?)

I’m just not sure what to do about this situation. It’s total whiplash because he doesn’t act this way in person and usually whatever he apologizes for he goes right back to doing the next time I see him in person.

TL;DR – Dad acts like a different person through text vs in person.

Any advice would be great.

Thank you all

He likely finds it difficult to express himself, however he needs to grow and learn how to do this if it is important to you. I’d suggest taking him out for a coffee or breakfast and then, when there, bring it up with him.
