My wife recently left me, and I am working out my notice at my job. I am a restaurant manager, and I had forgotten to deposit a few bank deposits for work at the bank on my way home in the night drop. Today at the end of my shift the owner, general manager, and office manager met with me in a side room and basically told me that money was missing from what was supposed to be deposited, and they know I stole it. In shock, I realized with everything going on, I forgot to take them to the bank and they were still sitting in my car. I tell them that, and the general manager escorts me to my car to retrieve them. When we take them back inside, the office manager goes through the envelopes and counts each one. After she’s done counting, she says there’s still $1,500 missing. I insist that she recount the money because I didn’t touch any of it, but the general manager tells me I have no control over this situation. He tells me that I either bring the money tomorrow by 3pm, or he’s calling the cops. He then kicks me off the property under threat of calling the cops.
I immediately drive right down the road to the gas station and start tearing apart my car to try and find any missing deposit that may be in there. I did it again when I got home. I am sure there’s no missing deposit in my car. I didn’t steal the money from them, and I don’t have $1,500 to pay them. I know I was neglegent in leaving the deposits in my car, but I would never steal any money. Is there anything I can do, or am I screwed?

You need to consult with a local criminal defense lawyer.
Many are going to say to just get a lawyer but you said you can’t afford it. People talk big but I would just do nothing. You didn’t take the money and don’t really know if it is really missing. I would do nothing for now. You should get a lawyer if you are served or arrested. If you are questioned by the cops only answer direct questions with a direct answer. I would just state you did not take any money and have no idea what they are talking about if asked. Do not tell them the story you told us it is irrelevant. Both your manager and the police will try and scare you.
At best you are going to get fired, at worst they could pursue legal action, nothing may come or it, but it will definitely be stressful.
