My first drive on the highway was on accident and passengers didn’t know

r/

I went out for a concert with 4 of my friends last week and short story of it is, they all drink and smoke, I don’t. So I’m designated driver and always have been but usually when I drive, I choose the route and I always avoid highways. I prefer to just avoid them if I can, I have a license and everything but I got T-boned on a highway and that put fear in me lol

Anyways, when we’re ready to head back to one of our girl friends places, I start driving when I’m halfway down a familiar route and realize it’s leading me to the fucking highway. I’m internally panicking because I was NOT paying attention to the route like I usually do because all 4 of my friends are damn near ready to puke or already puking in a big bag of hot Cheetos and so I was a little more focused on trying to make sure they didn’t choke on their vomit.

There was a car behind me and by the time I noticed the highway, it was already too late to switch lanes so I prayed to God while entering and merged into the highway for the first time with a bag of hot Cheetos and vomit in one hand. The whole time my eyes are panning from the road back to my gagging friends in the back for a split second just to make sure they’re still breathing. Ended up having to down my Stanley full of water within seconds because the hot Cheetos bag they used like a community barf bag had no room left.

So I’m panicking, soaking wet from my Stanley, and being used like a napkin the entire time.

Maybe I shouldn’t give myself so much credit considering the freeway was basically empty LMAO but I did a good job and I’m actually proud of myself for it lol. I would have preferred having both hands but s/o to my friend for using my hand as her tissue and not wiping her mouth on my car seat.

The next day, all of my friends said my driving put them to sleep (I think it was courtesy of the alcohol). They seemed surprised to know it was my first time on the highway but then again, they were all fuckin drunk so I don’t believe they remembered much of anything after the puking. Usually they don’t get drunk or high as much as they did last week but two of them just ended toxic relationships so I let them go ham and they already want to do it again 💀

Gosh I love those fucks but next time, I’m bringing barf bags.

I’m lovin’ how you casually tossed that highway debut into your confessional. Like, yeah, no big deal! And girl, using your hand as a barf rag is just good ol’ friendship right there. You should be proud of yourself for keeping those heathens safe and semi-dry while navigating the wilds of highways

This gave me flashbacks to when I accidentally ended up on the highway at 17 trying to impress a girl. GPS rerouted me and I panicked but just committed and somehow made it without dying or stalling. Felt like I beat a boss level.

Also yeah, barf bags are 100% necessary. A friend once puked straight into my cupholder. Took me hours to clean it and the smell never fully left. Never again.

I feel like having a known DD gives people a green light sometimes to lose self control. You had an already stress inducing scenario and then piled on top of it with your own highway demons and you came out on top congrats Op you have leveled up!

If it helps you feel any better, highways are (up to) 90% safer to be on than traveling in the city, despite the sketchy merges and high speed. Don’t let certain areas dictate your security behind the wheel. You are in charge of your vehicle, your life, and the lives of your passengers. Always approach driving with confidence, never arrogance. Always drive defensively, and remember, hesitation on the roadway gets people killed. Operating 4,000+ lbs of metal requires full commitment. Every action behind the wheel has to be 100% intentional and committed, no questions asked.

Dude, you basically got thrown into a high-stakes driving sim on nightmare mode . The fact that you managed to merge onto the highway for the first time while babysitting four human volcanoes AND holding the unholiest bag of Hot Cheetos ever… that’s legendary.

Lowkey, the way they all just peacefully passed out like you were a professional chauffeur instead of fighting for your life is sending me . You definitely earned your stripes that night. Next time, barf bags and maybe a hazmat suit.

Good on you for facing your fears and handling the situation(s) the best you could.

Hopefully there isn’t a next time, but if there is, you’ll want to pull over somewhere to handle distractions. It makes no one safer if you’re using one of your hands – at freeway speeds – to do anything other than driving. Or your eyes. Especially your eyes.

It sounds like you had a lot going on, which I understand, but you can’t help anyone do anything while you’re driving. Especially when you have limited experience in the environment.

Doing the right thing includes knowing when to pull over and take care of business so you can be a safer driver.

I don’t want to make you feel bad, but this situation could have easily been a tragedy regardless of how many other cars were on the road. There was too much distracting you from focusing on driving safely.

Shame on your friends for getting so bent you had to nurse them all while getting them home safe. That kind of behavior is unacceptable. You should not have been put in that situation.

You did an amazing job though, and you should be proud of what you had to overcome to rise up to the situation. Now maybe driving on freeways (in much more safe situations) can be less of a barrier for you and you can broaden your horizons.

But please be careful. I’m an older first responder and I was terrified for you the entire time I was reading your post. Nothing about that situation was safe for a lesser experienced driver, even stone cold sober.

Amazon: Emesis bags. It’s what they use in the medical field for vomit. Twist the top, shove it in the little cut on the ring, and toss 😊
