My husband was just subpoenaed as the star witness to a murder; we’re worried our neighbor will get us killed. What can be done?

To put it as briefly as possible, a year ago, our neighbor’s boyfriend shot and killed her son in her own front yard. Aside from those three, my husband was the only witness and the only one who called 911. The neighbor fled with her boyfriend, which they later caught (and with cocaine, fun). My husband gave an affidavit, then crickets for a little over a year.

Our neighbor still lives in that house (somehow she’s avoided charges). Now my husband has been subpoenaed as the star witness. We’re just surprised this is even going to trial. The guy was essentially caught in 4k. We’ve heard nothing else from anyone. They know where we live, clearly. The boyfriend has the longest, most absurd criminal record, so we wouldn’t put it past our neighbor, the boyfriend, or his affiliates to have my husband killed.

What can be done for our protection (aside from our own gun and cameras; we have that)? Who can we talk to? We don’t mind testifying if there’s some sort of assistance with relocating, but if there is no help and we are expected to sleep with one eye open in perpituity, that changes things. Ultimately, I would like to at least be moved out of this house, but where do we begin? All it takes is for there to be a drive by when we go to the car or the mailbox.

Your husband should obviously talk to the prosecutor about his concerns. You may be overstating the “star“ part of this. There is likely quite a bit of evidence, from statements made to police, to forensics, who knows what else. I also wouldn’t assume that it’s absolutely going to trial. There might be a deal struck right before trial. But your husband needs to speak to the prosecutor.
