My mom has no plans to give me my legal documentation once I’m 18

r/

For context, I turn 18 in December, I have duel citizenship from the U.S and the Dominican Republic, we reside in the state of Massachusetts, and I acquired my U.S citizenship from my mother when I was 4. Obviously still being a minor, I can’t make my own decision so when I was sent to live with family from the DR because of family problems, I had no say in it. My mom has no intentions of giving me my legal documentation back that proves I’m also a U.S citizen so even once I turn 18 I can’t go back if I wanted to. I don’t know what to do in this situation without involving lawyers and all that but I do want to know all of my opinions on how I can go about this situation as smoothly as possible. Do you have, or have you ever had, a US passport? That will make things easier, as you can apply for a renewal.

If not, you will need to contact the State Department for a replacement Consular Report of Birth Abroad. You will need your identity records from the DR sorted out to make that easier, so start on that if you don’t have them.

If you have any way to get a photo of your US passport data page or happen to know of be able to look up your passport number, that will make it easier to get a new one.
