My mother is in the process of going though a divorce. The soon to be ex keeps taking her license plate and wheels off her car to keep her from going anywhere. Is there anything we can do about it. The police say its a civil matter.

Hire a local private investigator. Document the abuse.

Time for a protective order. Easily is harassment.

You can get a wheel nut lock and have the license plates put on with epoxy. That’ll fix it

    1. Get video if you don’t have it. Set up video cameras to record. Watch the audio, PA is an all party consent state which means if there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. This means you can only record audio with permission or when there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.
    2. Go back to the police and ask to speak to someone up higher. Trying to prevent one’s spouse from leaving is domestic violence and worthy of a charge. If they refuse, they refuse, you cannot force the police to do anything as you know.
    3. Look into getting a civil restraining to keep him away from the property and your mother. Your mother can file for one in court herself, she doesn’t need a lawyer though it wouldn’t hurt to have one.
