My next door neighbour is in her mid 90’s and has a little dog who she now can’t take for walks. I noticed this and offered to take him for a walk once a day, Mon-Fri after work. This has been going on for a year now.
I noticed (around 8 months ago) that the dog was getting an ear infection of some sort and told her. It continued to get worse and I kept bringing it up but she said the vets is too expensive. I told one of her family members who reluctantly took the dog to the vets and gave the owner some drops to use.
When I picked up the dog the next day, she said she can’t get the drops in his ear because he keeps cowering behind the couch. When I tried, I asked her how many drops, and she said ‘I don’t know, just shove the whole thing down his ear’ 🤦🏻♀️.
Any way, the dogs ear continued to get worse and I was bugging them again, telling them he needs veterinary care and they went back to the vets (moaning that it was too much money the whole time and treating me like a nuisance), and they give her tablets to give him.
Well, she can’t get him to take the tablets at all. I offer, and admittedly it was really hard, the dog sniffed them out of absolutely everything and would spit them out. She ended up putting them in caramel and the dog (apparently) took them.
It’s now been 8 months since I first noticed the issue, and the poor dog is tilting its head constantly, shaking his head, scratching the ear, won’t let you anywhere near it. It’s orange and red inside from the tiny peek I was able to take and the paw he scratches it with is also orange and red (he’s a white dog). He’s a shadow of his former self and he looks so so sad and unhappy. He struggles on walks and never wants to play anymore.
I’m at a loss for what to do, I wish I could just take him on and pay for the treatment and look after him but I just don’t have the means at all. My neighbour once commented that the dog is the only thing she has to live for and the only company she has. I just don’t know what to do.

At this point, call county animal control. Unless you just want to take the dog and care for it. It deserves so, so much better and I’m not sure how you haven’t lost your cool.
It seems the dog is going to die a miserable death if nothing is done. What are you willing to do?
Call animal welfare or no kill rescue groups maybe they can contribute to the vet bills.
This is horrible torment for that poor dog, and the infection could easily worsen, as it sounds like it has.
From your profile you look to be UK based. It’s time to call the RSPCA. It sucks, but the dog is being neglected by its owner.
This person is a monster.
