My grand aunts (60-70 in age) have just been arrested for negligent homicide because my grand uncle (60’s) called them across the street to his house while his girlfriend (30 y/o) was having a miscarriage.
The girlfriend had the baby in the toilet, but she was not aware that she was pregnant. So, everyone thought she was dying. The ambulance was called once the girlfriend let them into the bathroom.
My grand uncle and his girlfriend are charged with second degree murder.
My aunts are charged with negligent homicide because they came over when he yelled. They were arrested 30 minutes ago. The miscarriage happened 2 months ago.
I don’t understand why my aunts are in cuffs. I’m sure the mother of the child did drugs and alcohol while pregnant, but she was not aware that she was pregnant. Why is everyone in jail? This doesn’t seem legal.

I assumed this was a fake story, but you have a long post history, and red states have been passing some crazy laws about reproduction. So maybe. Obviously your relatives are going to need lawyers. There’s probably more going on here than you know, or maybe this is just incompetence on the part of the police. Do you happen to know the statutes that they were charged under?
It may be that the police and/or the district attorney aren’t buying the story that she didn’t know she was pregnant. And they all think everyone there was trying to give her an illegal abortion.
Even if you do not know the full story of what is going on they are going to need lawyers. If they can afford it they should hire their own. If not they may qualify for a public defender as this is a serious charge.
