NHL – Power plays shouldn’t end after a goal.

r/

Penalties (minor/double minor) should be mandatory 2/4 minutes like a 5 minute major. None of this “score in the first 20 seconds, the other team is back to full strength.” Or double minor resetting to 2 minutes.

If you’re able to take advantage and score 3 goals in that 2 minutes, so be it.

I don’t think it’s a good idea but I doubt you’d see multi goal powerplays super often anyway. A better idea would be that scoring a short handed goal ends the powerplay

I think it’s a good balance with the rules on majors, double minors and minors. Don’t want to get too crazy on minors, if a goal is scored, feels like “justice is served”. I go the other way with it and don’t mind the jailbreak rule the PWHL has, just makes it more interesting stylistically on the PK.

If the refs were able to 100% accurately call penalties, then MAYBE I would agree. But I feel like this would just intensify the issue of bad/missed calls. Imagine the outrage if a team surges ahead by 3 goals in 2 minutes due to an incorrect call.

The people saying that scoring shorthanded should end the PP, that seems like it would be more unpopular. But where’s the advantage to the non-offending team?

I could see a compromise of full strength returned, but the individual is still in the penalty until the end of the time. Otherwise, the goals erasing the advantage is a good balance in my opinion.

Some sports like soccer have poor middle ground between a warning and a send off. I think yellow cards should be a 5 min. minor penalty

One goal per penalty should be enough of a punishment. But if you wanted to make a small change, guarantee one minute per penalty (the remainder, if any, of that minute would run following a goal).

Hot take; a shorthanded goal should get your player back out of the box

The way I see it is having to spend time with a man down which is fatiguing and stunts both your attack and defence, and then finally potentially conceding a goal is punishment enough.
