Non-bald guys: where do you get a haircut?

r/

Do you prefer going to a men’s barber shop, a unisex commercial salon like SuperCuts, women’s salon, do it yourself, or have someone you know do it?

Each type of place has its pros and cons. Men’s barber shops it can be very, fun especially if you become a regular, shooting the shit with the guys, but I also feel that you are mostly paying for the experience, as most seem to regularly charge $35 or more for a men’s haircut.

Commercial salons like Supercuts or Great clips generally suck but they can be affordable options if you get a simple haircut like a buzzcut, or perhaps a men’s regular business cut.

If you’re really talented I suppose you could do it yourself, especially if you just need to buzz your head with clippers or something. Those of you who are lucky have a friend or family member who cuts your hair for you!

I moved over a thousand miles from one state to another and I haven’t found a place to get a regular haircut yet. I could use your different opinions, please! I live in a rural town of 1500 people. Currently my options are women’s salons that are all walking distance and have appointments all the time, or a men’s barber shop where I can attempt to make friends again like I did at my old barbershop, but it’s 10 miles away an appointments have to be booked weeks in advance. It also seems very busy unlike my old Barber shop which was very low key and it was easy to have raucous conversations involving the whole barbershop

Get a quality set of clippers like a Surker off Amazon. It’s not that difficult to learn to cut it yourself and you save loads of time each month by not going to a barbershop. The clippers will pay for themselves almost immediately. I’ve been cutting my own hair for a couple years now and haven’t regretted a thing.

I go to a barber who works in a high end salon. I gave up on the low end places because the wait times were becoming too long and the cuts inconsistent. With my guy I schedule a time show up at that time and get right in the chair and at this point have been going to him for 7 years so he knows what I want done with out me having to say anything. For me it is worth the $40 for the cut.

I cut my own hair, it’s not that hard. Been doing it for years. I’d occasionally do it myself when I didn’t have time to go get a real one then COVID came and I had no choice but to get better at it. Now it’s pretty easy.

Been doing it myself with a Wahl for the past few years. Very close to the kind barbers use. Wahl has videos on how to do it.

local hair dresser does scissor cuts for about as much as the local “Great Clips” I prefer to keep my hair a little longer and styled. Cuts done with clippers either at a barber or at home don’t suit me.

Since I have been seeing my stylist for over 5 years now she knows exactly how I like. It takes all the inconstancy out of rotating barbers at a place like Great Clips no matter how good their notes are.

I go to a woman’s salon, but have had medium to long hair in some fashion for most of my life and entirely for the past 14 years.

End of 2024 I went back to a shaggy cut that comes just above the bottom of the ears. My lady kills it and it always smells great with a sweet soundtrack in there every time.

I’m so sorry bald guys 😔 but I had to put some sort of qualifier there. Up to 50% of men have baldness I needed to narrow it down to the target audience to edit for clarity

Local place man, been going there since my early 20s, I’m 35. They always cut my hair how I want it, can’t beat that and the pride is fair, $25 plus tip.

I go to a barbershop and have been using the same barber for over 15 years now.

A salon. I’ve been going to the same person for years. I started seeing her at a salon after my previous stylist moved out of the area. I tried a couple different ones in the same business but she was by far the most skilled and pleasant to converse with. She takes her time and enjoys her craft. She branched out on her own but she’s in the same area and I now see her at her new location. I always feel better about myself and feel I look the best I can look after seeing her.

I have a particular barber I go to who works at a regional chain. I only go to him. I went to another at the chain once and it just didn’t look right. The less hair you have the lower the margin of error. And mine is pretty low.
