Non-spoiler movie reviews are unnecessary

r/

Only spoiler reviews are worth watching. If I’m watching a review, I want to hear the creator’s opinion and what they think about the movie, what they took away from it. The only way to properly discuss all this is to use details, and those details may or may not be spoilers, but who cares, you shouldn’t be watching unless you’ve seen the movie already.

If you haven’t seen it, why are you watching a review? “I want to see if it’s good or not before I invest my time/money” ok then just google the movie and look at the critic and audience score and judge accordingly. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am, that’s all you need. Besides, trailers spoil so much of the movie nowadays, why wouldn’t you want to go in as blind as possible, with the fewest preconceived notions?

The best viewing experiences are when you have no idea what you’re getting into, no expectations. Which is another issue. By watching a review beforehand, you’re filling your mind with preconceived ideas of how the movie will be, which clouds your judgment of it, and ultimately influences what you take away.

Aggregate review scores are not that good of predictors of whether an individual would find a movie good or not. You usually want a reviewer who has similar taste to you to give their feedback. Since no reviewer is a perfect match for your taste, you want more than a numeric score or recommendation from them.

I disagree. Both have some merits, I agree with avoiding reviews to go in blind. However, that’s only for movies I care about. If I wanted to go see a random movie, I might take a quick look at the reviews to see if it’s worth watching.

If going to the movies are cheaper i’d go in blind way more, but since tickets are quite expensive i’d rather watch a spoiler free review of someone who has similar tastes to me to see what they think of the movie before deciding whether to watch it in theaters or not

Score aggregators don’t tell you why a movie was good or bad, which is kind of important in deciding whether or not to watch.

Since there’s way more content out there than what’s humanly watchable, and movies at the theatre cost money, it’s nice to be somewhat informed before investing the time and money.

A good movie cannot be spoiled. I enjoy watching The Empire Strikes Back every bit as much now as I did before I learned who Luke’s father was.

reviews should be ignored entirely. they arent from you so, its impossible to take any subjectives seriously. youd have to see the movie itself in order to form an opinion.

I don’t like spoilers and look at none if I like something I’m pausing the trailer 20 seconds in and I stop reading summaries the second o like it.

    But critic/audience scores are unreliable.

You have critics giving high marks to dull, pretentious shit like Nomadland and audience downvoting a movie/show to oblivion because its woke or casts a trans character.

A short, spoiler review gives a nice idea of what to expect. Like a review of Nomadland – “It is a gentle, compassionate, questioning film about the American soul.” That’s all I need to know — you know it’s going to be pretentious, boring guff because the review is pretentious boring guff.

A lotta y’all grew up without Siskel and Ebert, and it shows.

Considering you can never know for sure if you’re actually going to enjoy a movie unless you see it for yourself (especially if you’re like me where critic scores are completely irrelevant to whether I like a movie or not), I don’t really understand this, either.

I’m too lazy to articulate this in an argument form but this take is really dumb and shortsighted. Upvote

Most people who complain about spoilers only do so because society has decided that’s a thing we do and it gets attention anyway.
