People are so full of freedom of speech, which is a good thing, but it often means you can just say anything no matter the consequences.
But often i see people just blurting out stuff that is rather only a feeling than an opinion , or ist a sentiment.
I hear and read so often that people just shout out veil stuff and call it an opinion, but when you ask them what it’s based upon, they don’t know, it’s just their opinion.
So I don’t think you can call this an opinion at all.
How can you know what you realy feel about someting if you don’t know anything about it?
What it should be called is the next question

An uninformed opinion is still an opinion…. Not sure why it matters either way?
I dont know that much about space. My opinion is that its pretty cool and scary. Its based on it being cool and scary. You cant stop me OP.
Just because they don’t have a certain amount of knowledge on a subject doesn’t mean it’s less of an opinion😊opinions can be wrong
You are right. Most people are guided by feelings rather than informed opinions and the problem is that they feel entitled to voice these feelings with authority. This is why masses are easily manipulated.
That’s exactly the definition of an opinion. Unless you want to make up a new word.
It is based on the Latin word ‘opinari’ meaning think or believe.
This one is from Wikipedia “An opinion is a judgement, viewpoint, or statement that is not conclusive, as opposed to facts, which are true statements”
Opinion based comments and storylines have overtaken the populous. Individual research and critical thinking is no longer the norm but is discouraged.
I think this relates to the Dunning–Kruger effect. People often don’t know what they don’t know, and often it’s only when you really start to deeply research a topic that you realise just how much you don’t know.
“People are so full of free speech”……. Here’s an unpopular opinion for you op. There is no free speech on Reddit anymore. At the very least it’s not popular hear just a talking point an little more.
You can only have an opinion if the topic is subjective in general. Otherwise it’s a factual statement.
Not sure how unpopular this is. But add in when their opinion is stated as fact and that often it’s just untrue.
For example, go to a UK sub and post about supermarkets etc having the round up to donate option on the card machines. See all the people who know nothing about UK tax, saying it’s because they get tax breaks from the money and/or can claim it as their own tax exempt donations etc. Regularly get the “I’m entitled to my opinion” lines when it’s actually just not true.
Some subjects are not set in stone, nor do they have provable facts. How often do you hear of people having opinions about physics (and I mean physics, not shit derived from it)?
I hear what you are saying and you aren’t far off but everyone is allowed to have an opinion, that’s free speech.
But uniformed people almost always have poor opinions on a subject. And they don’t deserve much credit for the opinion they have.
The whole confusion these days with free speech is people thinking their uninformed opinion equals the same thing as someone well versed in said subject.
I know, but to have a feeling about someting, you should at least think about it and know a bit, not just shout out the first thing you feel and call it an opinion.
That’s the definition of an opinion
None of us knows all that much about how the world works, really. Maybe bits and pieces, but in-depth well thought-out takes on a variety of subjects? Rare. Often, people express the latest thing they heard or read about a topic.
Not knowing anything about a political issue and having an ‘opinion’ is considered a sacred duty.
Everyone is both missing and proving op’s point. No one is saying that opinions have no place in conversation. But debates and arguments are not conversation, they are a jousting match, to be carried out with honor. It is a vehicle for compromise, not a platform to voice an opinion. People no longer enter debates in good faith, they believe that because they “know” they are right, you will either agree with them, or you are the enemy of everything good.
