One of the biggest reasons veganism as a diet/ belief gets a bad rep is because the meat industry is so horrid we would rather ignore the cruelty than acknowledge it

r/

starting off by saying im not a vegan. What prompted me to post about this is the recent discourse on tiktok about someone air frying a crab alive. So much backlash. So many people showing empathy. This is only because they saw the video, saw the process. It wasnt them doing this. So its easy to point fingers and call that cruel.

Where as, talking about the meat industry as a whole, we are a part of it. We are the reason why this industry exists in such a large scale. So its easier to shut down the conversation than sit in the discomfort of knowing how the food you eat is produced.

when it comes to vegans talking about the issue of cruelty within the meat and dairy industry (not even forcing veganism on people, just talking about the cruelty), they are suddenly shut down and labelled as insufferable. Even now, the reason I feel comfortable posting this here is because im NOT a vegan. If i were one, i know people would be quick to label me as yet another insufferable and annoying vegan.

I eat meat. But i still acknowledge that no matter what, the meat and dairy industry is cruel and I do not understand why people lose their shit when someone acknowledges this. The least we can do is acknowledge it.

Everyone thinks they’re a good person. The intellect can be used to justify just about anything.

It’s difficult for people to really honestly face the suffering they cause.

Oh please, that cruelty is nothing compared to some of the shit that happens naturally in nature. Animals die slow painful deaths everywhere. That’s just life.

Clearly ppl don’t know how much life is destroyed for farming purposes…

How does veganism get a “bad rep”? Seems like most folks accept it as possibly the healthiest diet…like it’s not seen as a fad or anything.

    I’m in California though.

Well I don’t actually think veganism’s rep is that bad anymore. At least not where I live.

But I also think you vastly over-estimate how much people care about animals. I love animals, but it’s plain for me to see that a large chunk of people legitimately could not care less about animals and have a very “me and my species first fuck the rest” kind of attitude. In fact a lot of the times it’s just “me first fuck the rest” and they also don’t care that much about other human beings.

We are aware of the cruelty. If we haven’t seen the documentaries, we’ve seen the clips or photos or at at least heard the stories. We still don’t care enough to stop. Nom nom nom. 🍖

I totally agree with you. Many of us are massive hypocrites when it comes to animal cruelty and I’m one of them.

One of the biggest reason it gets a bad rap is because a lot of vegans are so abrasive about it.

I understand they believe it’s a massive injustice that needs to be righted. If you’re immediately aggressive about a topic when you’re not even asked and let it consume your entire personality you’re going to face criticism and opposition. I think a lot of vegans are their own worst enemy to the cause.

It can be brought up in conversation and discussed in an adult manner. If it’s our first time meeting and you make a snide comment about my lunch choice I’m not going to listen to a single thing you have to say.

Vegans could fix a lot more issues in the meat industry by buying meat from local farmers who raise their animals in a wholesome way. There are many large scale farms that have very questionable and unhealthy practices, but the antidote to that is to turn around and support the healthy, organic, grass-fed, pasture-raised type of farms, who give their animals a beautiful life (even though they will use them as meat. It’s part of farming, and that part is not cruel)

It gets a bad rep because people try to push it on you like religion. That’s annoying AF. I dated a vegan chick. Took her to this vegan place she recommended. It was like $30 for a fake burger (ironic how all vegan food is made to be meat like lol). I made a joke how I could have got a steak for this price and she was so ‘offended’ get a grip.

At the end of the day I like eating meat and I really don’t care how it is farmed or processed

Call it what you want but morality is entirely subjective and also the holier than thou attitude isn’t going to convince anyone to change

But most vegans will hate on you for hunting your own meat, which is more ethical than eating industrial farmed fruits and vegetables. I think the reason they get a bad rep is because they go to such great lengths to appear superior.

It’s difficult to sustain a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle when you like the taste of meat and its consumption is so normalized. Straight up anyone I know who has sustained the diet long term did not like the taste of meat in the first place (or never tried it). I was a vegetarian for 6 years.

I’m not uncomfortable with the meat industry. I eat meat and veggies both. What happens before it gets to me is none of my concern and they are food and that’s what they are in the industry for. To be raised, killed and eaten.

The truth is that for a lot of people, a worse crime than murder is being annoying.

I certainly think so. People say nature is worse, but I don’t know. In nature, they have some kind of a life. I used to harvest chickens commercially, and those birds seem to live a much worse life. Like, I pulled dessicated bird corpse of live birds and throw them fuckers in the bin to send to slaughter. Bro was just dragging part of the homie around on some Flintstones “it’s a living” type shit. I still eat meat, though. I’ve seen, smelled, heard infinitely worse than what I’ve described and I still eat meat because I ignore it. If you ever catch slightly cereal like smell on raw chicken, it’s because of the feed. I rarely smell it, but when I do i takes me right back to the barns.

Upvote because I completely disagree, until the last paragraph. I fully understand eating meat means the death of an animal. And for a lot of those animals that means bleeding them dry while they still live (though unconscious, America has Temple Grandin to thank for that and a lot of better practices).

And I fully support practices that will lead to less suffering. Medicines to reduce or prevent abscess. Using artificial intelligence to find cures for diseases and other maladies.

But the end result, an animals life being lost for my sustenance, I’m okay with and imagine will remain so unless we invent a method to artificially make meat that won’t result in $2000 chicken thighs. Or making a vegan dish, full of all the minerals and components I get from meat, is as simple as making a burger or scrambled eggs is.

I’m primarily not a vegan because I lack the emotional connection to animals. Also, I know if given the chance most would gobble me up.

Oh maybe one of the reasons why they don’t like them is their attitude and maybe some people even got those who wished them death or some disease

Every time I see a video of a cow playing with a beach ball or remember they have best friends, I think about going vegetarian again. But it’s a tough diet for me, I was bad at getting enough protein.

I try to buy local meats and dairy. Fresher, supports my community, animals are much more likely to be humanely cared for and live a good life. But it’s not as affordable or readily available to some families.
