Moving back in with your parents as a fully grown adult is already a massive test of patience. You revert back to your teenage dynamic almost instantly. You lose your personal space and suddenly find yourself being questioned about your daily habits. But one mother on Reddit just took helicopter parenting to an illegal new level, and her bizarre crusade against online shopping is leaving everyone completely speechless.
The Original Poster is a mother whose thirty one year old daughter is in the middle of a major life transition. After living in Brussels for four years, the daughter was offered a better job position and is officially moving back to London. Relocating across countries is incredibly stressful, so the mom graciously offered her a place to crash.
The daughter cannot move into her brand new flat until mid February. She asked if she could stay at her childhood home in the meantime, and the mom happily agreed because she missed her kid. The daughter even offered to pay rent, but the mother generously refused to accept her money. Everything sounded like a perfectly supportive family setup.
But then the mother noticed a modern habit that absolutely sent her over the edge. Her daughter has the audacity to order things on the internet. If she runs out of toothpaste, she simply adds it to an online cart with her shampoo instead of walking down to a physical store. She ordered clothes, items for her upcoming new house, and even her own father’s birthday present online.
To make matters worse in the eyes of this judgmental mother, the daughter also orders grocery deliveries. Because she is living rent free, the daughter insisted on paying for all the household food. Getting groceries delivered to the front door is incredibly convenient, especially for a busy professional who is navigating an international move. But the mom decided this behavior was deeply unhealthy and blamed her own child for singlehandedly killing the local high streets.

Instead of having a normal conversation about her weird economic theories, the mother took psychotic action. Every single time a package arrived at the house for a full week, she secretly intercepted it and returned it to the sender. She literally sent back her daughter’s mail to force her to shop locally. That is not just overstepping a boundary. In many places, tampering with someone else’s mail is literally a crime.
Obviously, you cannot hide a week of missing packages from a millennial with tracking numbers. The daughter quickly realized what was happening because multiple crucial items never showed up. She rightfully confronted her mother and was absolutely fuming. She accused the OP of treating her like a literal child and firmly stated her mother had zero right to return her personal property.
The mother tried to justify her unhinged behavior by claiming something had to be done to fix the daughter’s shopping habits. The daughter was completely done with the disrespect. She immediately packed up all her belongings, walked right out the door, and checked herself into a hotel. She chose to waste her hard earned money on a hotel room just to escape her mother’s ridiculous control issues.
Now the mother is playing the ultimate victim. She begged her daughter to move back in and promised never to steal her mail again. But the daughter is holding her ground and plans to stay at the hotel until her new flat is ready. The OP has the nerve to call her daughter stubborn and unreasonable for protecting her own property. Meanwhile, the husband is spineless and choosing to stay entirely neutral while his wife intercepts the mail.
The internet did not hold back and universally declared the mother a massive ahole. You do not get to dictate how another grown adult spends their time or money just because they are sleeping in your spare room. Returning someone’s paid property without their consent is incredibly toxic and a massive violation of trust. If you want to save the high street, go buy a sweater yourself.
