Ovarian cyst / bleeding follicle

r/

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could help me / shed some light on your experiences (if you feel comfortable) I recently went for an ultra sound scan and the results came back as a bleeding follicle on my right ovary, with this in mind my doctor wants me to have a repeat scan – which is next week (there’s been 4 weeks since the first ) to see if it’s still the same diagnosis.

Here’s the thing, what actually is a bleeding follicle? Because when I asked my doctor if it’s a cyst she was really grey about it, yet when she called last week to book me in for the repeat scan she referred to it as a cyst.

If it is a cyst or indeed I still have this bleeding follicle is there anything they can do? Or is it like a watch and wait scenario until it ruptures (which obviously I wouldn’t want and can be life threatening)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all x

This is really confusing terminology for a lot of people. Generally, if you’re a young person that ovulates every month, you develop a dominant follicle every month that eventually ruptures and releases an egg.

Sometimes that follicle doesn’t rupture or there is a hormonal issue (IUDs commonly cause cysts). These cysts are usually follicles that kept growing and didn’t rupture. Some of these follicles have bigger blood vessels feeding them than others and when the follicle/cyst tries to rupture, you get a hemorrhagic (bleeding) cyst.

Usually these self resolve within a few weeks and are not serious. They can be very painful and in some cases require surgery, but the large majority self resolve.
