Pants for Frail People

r/

My dad is 93. We use general track suit and pants for him, but recently have noticed that the waist elastic is too hard for him to pull up and down. Any recommendations for pants that are easier to operate for frail people?

Look into assistive technologies. There are many things available for people who need a little help.

We used to use suspenders back in the day. He’d need to be able to put the loops on but they would kinda pull the pants up by themselves.

An occupational therapist may be able to help you make some sensible, helpful wardrobe decisions for your dad. They will also be able to help with a number of techniques and assistive devices for getting dressed. I’m still in my early seventies and not frail, but I have arthritis that’s really disabling. I have an oddball looking wooden stick with a smooth, blunt hook at one end that I can use to pull on pants, both under- and outer-, without having to lean over or to bend that leg that hurts so much. It could also be used to put on sweaters or shirts, though I don’t need it for that. I have another strange looking item that looks like a milkshake cup cut in half the long way, made out of sturdy, flexible plastic with two ropes attached to the cup. I can stretch a sock over it, put my foot into the cup part, and gently pull the sock on, over my heel, and partway up my leg til I can reach it. These two items cost about thirty dollars and have made getting dressed something I can continue to do for myself. The O/T person will also know about helpful clothing and other items and techniques. It’s well worth doing this for your dad for his own independence and self esteem. Good luck to you and to him.

Get him a bigger size so the elastic is looser.

Adaptive clothing is the answer. Silverts isn’t the only place that has it, but I linked it so you can get an idea of the range of items out there and then make your own decisions about what makes sense and where you would like to get it.
