Paper straws were not a bad idea

r/

Certainly not a great idea from a consumer standpoint as they’re often shit quality (which also proves they can be good), but every word, action and decision we make or do — especially one that causes so much noise — has its own ripple effect. We can already this motivated world to further move away from plastics, even though we have a long way to go. I would personally love to see plastic bottles be replaced for the good old glass reusable ones, since plastic bottles are kinda the main reason we have microplastics in our testicles. Infertility ain’t fun, and neither is non-degradable packaging.

I think it pissed people off because it such a drop in the bucket. Compared to all the excess packaging that gets used whenever you buy something online, or even a big box store.

It’s the whole ‘soggy straw’ moaning that gets me.

We’ve had only paper straws where I am for years now. I have never had one of them go soggy on me, ever, not even when I get a drink at the movies and am finishing it on my way out of the theatre two hours later.

How slow are these people drinking?!

How hard would it be to just make them the same way as the paper cups? I know it still uses plastic but so does the entire plastic cup and lid that the straw comes with. Wasn’t the reason straws specifically had to be prohibited was that the shape and size made them dangerous to wildlife? You wouldn’t have the same problem with a plastic coated cardboard straw. I’m not sure why paper cups seem to be falling out of favour while we’re moving away from plastic straws, if anyone thinks plastic fast food cups are getting recycled they’re delusional.

Glass bottles have their own shitty externalities which is why so much stuff changed to plastic to begin with. There’s really no free lunch in any of this just trade offs.

You say that this motivates the world to move further away from plastic, but on the other hand: people only have so much goodwill towards this whole environment thing, and it’s being used up on this nonsense. We have paper straws, those dumb caps that are attached to the bottle, and plastic bags now cost a fortune (at least where I’m from). All things that don’t really matter. People are getting fed up already, and we haven’t really made a difference. It’s all just a drop in the ocean.

Metal straws are the superior option, as long as you have a little brush to clean them.

Lol is this in response to my unpopular opinion from 10 min ago?

Paper straws are coated in PFAS which can lead to a number of long term health problems and have a negative environmental impact: https://www.sciencefocus.com/comment/paper-straws-forever-chemicals

Plasic straws also have micro plastics, so there’s not really a good option either. Honestly, I usually just take the lids off.

I agree with you but I hate paper straws. I think they’re a fantastic replacement for cutting down plastic pollution. I hate them though because I hate the feeling of the dry paper straw in my mouth, idk it’s a texture thing I also can’t do wooden cutlery or like ice lolly sticks. I’ll get through it though, it’s less jarring when it stops being so dry. When I used to get coffee from Starbucks, I loved their sippy cup lids. Yes it was plastic but the lid is plastic anyway and less paper straws are used, I guess. I wish more places did sippy cup lids, I miss them!! Although this is just personal preference and not for the environment

I’m old enough to remember when paper was all there was. They were fine.

Totally agree paper straws aren’t perfect but they were a step in the right direction. It got people thinking about plastic use which is half the battle.

    Pasta straws are the solution!
