Im currently paying $1,200/month for a child I never had in Los Angeles. Long story short I dated a girl in California for 4 years when I was 18-22 years old. She got pregnant and we didn’t know whose child it was. Like the idiot I am, I stuck around to find out and fell back in love with her. Once I found out the child was NOT mine, I was already invested. 2 years later she cheated again and I left her. Now child support of Los Angeles is taking $1,200 a month from me. We have had 2 court ordered paternity tests and proven the child isn’t mine, but the state says I am the legal father for having taken care of the child with her for 2 years since birth. I am NOT on the birth certificate. I don’t know how to get out of this mess. It’s been 10 years at this point and I feel like I’m trapped. Please…someone help me

The only way you will be free is if the child is adopted by another man
child support is for the childand unless another man takes responsibility they will put the responsibility on you
I’m not a lawyer, but that’s exactly what you need. Not sure if this would be a divorce attorney since you were never married, but that’d be my best guess. If a divorce attorney can’t help, they can point you in the right direction. But you DEFINITELY need a lawyer. Not sure, but you may be able to get the child support you’ve already paid back, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much on that one.
I work with a guy in NYC, 2 of his 3 kids aren’t his. He makes 200k a year. Paid child support and college, his ex wife still gets a chunk of his pension. He’s been to a ton of lawyers. No one will touch it. His kids got him 23 and me, that’s how he found out.
Unless you deny paternity rapidly after the birth and prove it many, most perhaps all states will make you pay child support to adulthood. It’s awful. But it used to be worse: once the only means of denying paternity was to be in prison or at sea.
Not a lawyer. Ask fir custody and child support
Keep shopping for an attorney. I’m shocked they are taking from you without a signed birth certificate/no marriage to the mother. Have you seen the birth certificate to make sure no one forged your name? California has very strict laws when it comes to child support but there’s definitely a way out with the right lawyer.
Same in Canada. If you take care of a kid that’s not yours you pay child support
Sucks but that’s the law these days
I know a case where the woman was double dipping. Getting child support from the father and the ex
I work interstate child support cases, and California is special. They asked us to get an order on a guy, and when we told them DNA was 0%, they argued he had acted as the father by living with the mother. Our judge tossed the case.
