Paying for anyone’s substack or email newsletter is beyond ridiculous

r/

I just don’t get it.

I can see if you need it for business or work and the info in there is crucial or vital. Otherwise, I think u are just burning your money.

Doesn’t sound much different from a Patreon tbh – throw a few bucks at a creator you want to support, get something in return.

In a time when massive media conglomerates are gobbling up everything in sight and the internet’s full of AI slop, I don’t think it’s so crazy that some people would value independent artists/writers/etc.

I mean, I have never paid for someone’s Substack but what’s so different about paying for that versus paying for a book? If someone’s spending their time writing stuff you enjoy it’s very reasonable to pay them for it so that they can continue. Never heard of anyone paying for a newsletter though

On a monthly bases yes, no one here is rich enough to really be a creators patron. I wish they let you do single payments, I’ll throw you 15 bucks once but in this day and age I refuse to do any more ‘subscriptions’

Do you subscribe to any streaming content or a Patreon? It’s literally the same thing. If you get enough enjoyment and entertainment out of something that you deem is worth the money then it’s absolutely not wasting money.

You’re basically saying that any money spent on entertainment is a waste.

An email newsletter and a substack are different things. Most email newsletters are free.

I don’t really understand why you would be averse to others paying people for their work if it is interesting or valuable.

When ppl are compensated foe their content they eventually have the time to make more and better content. Nothing wrong with paying for someone’s work foe you to enjoy.

the odd part of this is the giving a fuck what people spend their money on… paying for a substack is usually done because the customers want to support the writer, the content itself is lagniappe

We’ve all grown up absolutely spoilt by the amount of stuff we can get for free, and then some of us complain about even viewing adverts to support the costs of hosting this stuff, let alone paying for the content directly

If someone spends hours crafting a newsletter or making content I don’t expect them to give it away for free. It is a business transaction.

If someone has good content and I find it valuable enough $5-10/month is worth it.

Substack profits the extreme right and has absolutely hideous ideologies behind it. Pay your favourites directly.

    Everything is a side-hustle now.

So your opinion is that paying for something that isn’t valuable to you is dumb?

But it’s ok if the information is important.

    Real hot take there, sparky.

It’s supporting someone’s work. Maybe there’s as much or more value in that than just throwing money at all the other media services out there.

I agree with you, it’s a waste of money.

Email newsletters should be free, but what is a substack? Op should explain things most people have never heard of.

I disagree. I subscribe to two things on Substack and enjoy both immensely. One is a musician whose album (one of several) I had in the 90s for years who now writes a great blog, and sometimes hosts events for subscribers. One is an independent news site — I enjoy the quality of writing and the variety of perspectives. I think Substack is a worthwhile service, and it’s valuable for the producers as well.
