Ever since I was a child, I was aware of the existence of penguins. Pretty much everyone loved them. However, I thought of them to be nothing special. Just to make up for it, I became a poser to please the masses. Later on in life, I finally expressed my true self. I don’t like penguins
The main reason why I do not like penguins is mainly due to how popular they are. If penguins were less popular, I would’ve had no opinion on them. To be specific, there are many other birds that can swim, are black and white or are flightless. For example, we have swans. Although you’d know about swans in preschool or something, swans get much less attention. They’re elegant creatures that can be found in almost every continent and are loving parents. Also, we have cormorants. They are skilled hunters who can fly and swim underwater, but unfortunately they gained a poor reputation due to human greed. In fact, if you look up “penguin plush”, you’d find many. To make things worse, penguins hog the spotlight of zoos. When I looked up a forum regarding best zoo animals, penguins were #1 on the list.
Moreover, penguins are intensely beloved. There’s several movies about them: Happy Feet, The Pebble & The Penguin, Surf’s Up, and Penguins of Madagascar to name a few. Also, when it comes to children’s winter outfits, penguins are cats and dogs.
Also, I find penguins to be bizarre. To get the elephant out of the room, they look like birds from another planet. Most birds have a similar body shape while penguins are upright. I know it’s an adaptation for swimming but it just looks weird to me. Unlike many people do, I don’t find them to be cute or anything. Not even there chicks tbh. Also, I find their waddling gait to be undignified (sorry if it sounds elitist-ish) rather than cute and funny. Ironically, emperor and king penguins were given such dignified names only because of their size.
In conclusion, I find penguins to be peculiar and overrated animals.

I like how you say they are not special but also look like aliens from another planet. They do look unique you can’t deny that.
Also penguins live in the harshest climate in the world and not only survive but thrive.
Seeing a group of emperor penguins in thousands strong huddles to survive the Antarctic winter while not having eaten for months is a stunning display of their resilience and community.

Most fowls and waterfowls have the same level of marketability as penguins, either for food or due to their comedy/cuteness factor (or because peafowls are one of the most visually interesting birds)

We need visibility for the penguins for conservation efforts. Most of their populations have been declining. The African Penguin for example has been creeping closer to the endangered species list.

Penguins are incredible birds, I recommend a documentary called March of The Penguins.

Penguins are cute though, swans are beautiful, but not cute. There is no other bird who walks so upright as penguins, that’s why they look like humans the most, but chubby childlike cute humans at that.

Penguins, a certain kind of capuchin monkey, some dog breeds, dolphins, beluga whales, and ESPECIALLY chimpanzees are all globally beloved animals in media that either I just can’t understand the appeal or am just sick of seeing exploited
I also heard there was a field study done on penguins and the researchers didnt release much of what they found because apparently penguin behavior is incredibly foul and cruel. It was deemed too graphic and disgusting. But tbf birds in general are very cruel animals (yeah there are some exceptions) they’re honestly metal as fuck. And also disgusting. But we like to think of them as beautiful and free so thats how we see them.

As a zoologist, I don’t believe we should be encouraging any form of hate train, especially against penguins, which half of the species are threatened or critically endangered. Shame on you for promoting such harmful opinions, all because you think they are “too popular”.
