People over 50 who are single and childless, are you lonely?

r/

I don’t want kids or a long term relationship, I’m happy with a few friendships here and there and the casual relationships I get into. I’m pretty set on remaining single and childless I think. Does it get lonely though, like people always say it does?

I haven’t found it lonely and am very content being single and without children.

I have however made a concerted effort to identify and do things that are for fulfilling to me and nurtured relationships with people I care about. It’s always been important for me to actively participate in life and not be a passive bystander. That has helped me create the life that I want in an intentional way.

69 here. I knew at single digits I never wanted kids and now at almost 70 I’ve never had one minute of regret. My life is rich, full, rewarding, happy, and full of adventure of my choice. I’m not lonely or regretful at all. Besides, having kids wouldn’t be a guarantee against loneliness anyway. Ask every old person you encounter, or visit a nursing home and ask the residents, how long it’s been since they’ve seen or heard from any of their kids. I’d rather have a “family by choice” of friends than sitting at home by the phone hoping one of my kids will finally call.
