Personal creativity is rare, shunned and laughed at

r/

Let me explain; Today I saw an amazing Porsche driving on the road, it had this gorgeous old pink colour. When I drove next to it, the man who was driving it wore an impeccable outfit which completely matched with his car. It was not over done, it looked classy, his gillet was just a beautiful piece of clothing but his whole fit made it just right. I showed him some appreciation and continued on my way.

It had me thinking though… I barely see anything like this, and I spend a lot of time on the road. Cars get more and more generic, the clothes that are currently trending are more and more generic (i’m not talking about the retail, vintage and secondhand shops), house interiors are seemingly all the same. It seems like nobody wants to stand out anymore, no personal creativity, no fun stuff and just a lack of vivaciousness.

I think expressing yourself with personal creativity is fun and brings joy, but in daily life I barely see any of it, so I assume its an unpopular opinion. For context, I live in the Netherlands and I visit a lot of places for work, so I see both the rural places and the cities. I’ve been a student, and some of the groups are incredible with their expression but most are again, generic.

In my opinion, humans have a lot of creativity, and we are currently in an era where there are no limitations as to what we can create. I would love to see weird houses, sparkly cars, bikes and motorcycles that are so different from what we know, clothes that are matching or rather striking. Even if they are not my taste, I appreciate the creativity.

Is there something I’m missing? Is it not celebrated to be human? To have imagination and ideas and bring them to the world? Is my own vision so bleak that I cannot see the creativity that is happening? I absolutely love living, but why do I get the feeling so many people do not?

Is it too much to ask to see more people wearing matching outfits with their cars? And not for the special event that is happening once or twice a year, but for a daily living? For work? For just ourselves?

Teslas are creative and people vandalize them for no reason except being angry about the U.S. election.

A year ago people were praising them.

This is a sign that a lot of people are full of shit, so I guess that just means it doesn’t matter if they don’t like your style.

you’re focusing on a very specific, niche subset of creative expression, and perhaps not seeing other types of personal creative expression.

The world is getting more and less creative at the same time.

An example is men’s hair, fashion trends or even tattoos. Even simple things like facial hair on men – it’s common to see both ways now whereas before it used to be more one way or the other.

As recently as 50 years ago, most men in the US wore one of just a few outfits, one of a few hair styles and few tattoos.

All of those have broadened significantly
and people show much more self expression.

In the context of cars, it’s true that cars used to have more range of colors but now black and silver are the most common colors.

Some things that drive these trends are mass production of items so you see more similar ones at once.

At one time, many homes in the US were either custom or made from sears catalog homes until tract homes came along.

It’s impossible to say all this without pointing out that some of this driven by costs.

Because of the increased cost of labor, custom homes are much more expensive than mass produced homes.
At the same time, people can customize more things than ever, clothes, cases, fashion and it’s all tolerated much more than before.

I think you’re focusing on a few specifics while ignoring that creativity is much more widely accepted than before.

“His Gillette was just a beautiful piece of clothing”

    This has to be bait

My girlfriend is an artist, not just a hobbyist, that’s her career and she’s very successful. Her car is a very boring, old, black, Honda. Inside that Honda you’ll find all sorts of art supplies from the last workshop she did with kids, but from the outside you would never know.

I went to art school and a lot of the lecturers would dress very plain, often just all in black, and these would be world renowned artists and designers.

You are focussing on very specific and outward expression. Many creatives are introverted, preferring their work to speak for them. Your idea of personal creativity is a loud one, and seems to focus on more shallow creativity. I’m more interested in the person that actually creates, who has an artistic practice, who thinks artistically, not just has a different coloured car

i agree , people are scared also of independant thinkers and those who dont follow conventional ways of life. its really an allegory on how people are scared of change and cling to familiarity even when it limits them. conformity is a survival mechanism .. the duality of man is a weird thing.
