Podcast Hosts Need to Stop Apologizing for Mispronouncing Words

r/

There are two main reasons why I think anyone who does any kind of scripted or prepared public speaking should not stop to apologize in advance for mispronouncing a word.

You Know in Advance What Word You Will Need To Say

Pronunciation guides are available. There is no shortage of material on any given subject where you can listen to experts speak aloud and learn how to pronounce the specific terms you will be discussing. I would think that would be part of the minimum level of preperation.

You Are Not Expected to Pronounce Words Outside Your Native Tongue Perfectly

Non native english speakers mispronounce words, or use non-standard pronunciations all the time. While larger deviations are sometimes noticed, in formal and informal contexts, it is usually perfectly understandable and allowable for a someone to pronounce a word from a language they dont speak natively in a way that’s close enough and natural to the types of phonemes and sounds that are used in their own language.

Apologizing for mispronouncing a word at best derails the flow of a presentation, and at worst comes across as a weak attempt to make up for laziness.

Honestly every time someone differs in pronouncing a word, it’s an opportunity for you to go to the internet and find out how it’s actually pronounced.

It’s a coin flip that you’re the one with the wrong pronunciation.

Maybe people should stop hounding them or moaning in the comments or just grow up and they wouldn’t feel the need to?

I love the Boyscast because Ryan Long is a native English speaker but fucks words up all the time.

If you haven’t heard it it is reminiscent of Flagrant just less hyena laughing to suck up to the host and shameless plugs.

1.5 hours one or two plugs on the Boyscast and because they’re not super successful but successful enough they are relatable
