[Pokémon] How does Pay Day handle different currencies?

r/

When you use Pay Day, it seems to create Pokedollars to collect after the battle. So it doesn’t seem to be generic gold pieces, which you’d have to exchange for actual money.

But how does that work with different currencies? If I have a Meowth that creates Pokedollars, and then I take it to Japan, will its Pay Day start producing Yen?

And how would it work for a cashless currency? Would the money just appear in a bank account? Could you train a Meowth to create crypto?

Meowth’s Payday throws out coins that look like the coin attached to Meowth’s forhead.

So I’d say that it’s safe to say they aren’t actual gold, but in the past they may have taken the place in the Poke’mon universe of Cowrie Shells in our world, acting as proto-currencies. Then once gold, paper, and digital currencies took over they became a thing that you could just sell for money to collectors and other people.

It just seems like the games streamline the process as I vaguely remember an old episode of the anime when they showed Team Rocket encountering a Meowth that could use payday (as their Meowth doesn’t have the ability as his ability to talk takes up several move slots) and they were basically worthless.

The Meowthcoin. I think this is the most cursed thing I’ve seen today 😀

I wish I had a proper answer for you, All I can find is that the move originally seems to generate ‘coins’ that do seem to be in that sense generic coins.
Maybe eventually the Pokédollar gets tied to this pokécoin standard. Which would mean that the pokémon’s physical location or training can’t influence the kind of coins it creates. So also no digital currency.

Which would make sense, because since the coins are flung as a source of damage (like a very valuable shotgun blast) the move wouldn’t do any damage unless Meowth suddenly flings a hard drive at their opponent.

The Pokemon world isn’t Earth, remember. All the regions we’ve seen seem to share the same currency.

Presumably, the coins Meowth uses for Pay Day are simply coins the Meowth has found strewn around and hoarded (multiple PokeDex entries throughout several games and generations state that they love coins and shiny objects). Meowth is creating currency, it’s simply using currency it’s found
