This is awful. And I am I not correct in saying that the 1861 Act is not the basis for abortion law in Northern Ireland (and possibly Scotland – I don’t know), so the reference to the UK is incorrect?
I’ve been saying that the current situation (in England and Wales at least) is vulnerable, as abortion is not a right. The system relies too much on the willingness of two qualified medics signing off each procedure, and I believe this is the potential attack vector that American extremists would exploit. There needs to be a new Abortion Act in England and Wales (and possibly Scotland) which makes Abortion a right, and radically changes the current pathways requiring sign-off (while at the same time safeguarding people who may be being coerced into getting an abortion without their consent).

Didn’t UK allow to sell abortive pills to people without restrictions? And now they want to punish women for it? What the hell?

I absolutely expected this to be a story about the US and couldn’t figure out what it was doing in the Observer.
