Poor drivers should be required to drive small vehicles

There’s a clear correlation between the size of a vehicle and the odds that it will kill someone else in an accident. The taller and heavier a vehicle is, the greater danger it poses to those around it in an accident.

So what I propose is that anyone with a repeat accident record or too many points on their record should be required to drive a small vehicle, like a Honda Civic. That person is still going to make mistakes because they are terrible at driving. But at least those mistakes are less likely to kill innocent people in other cars.

The last thing we need is our absolute worst drivers cruising around in 8,000-pound pickup trucks. Those vehicles are so dangerous that you should have to demonstrate some actual skill to drive them — beyond just getting a license.

We already sort of do this in that you need a special license to drive a semi-truck. So it’s not an unprecedented idea. And it would keep us all safer. Hard to imagine a real downside here.

Edit: I’m surprised by how many people think that my unpopular opinion is that larger vehicles are more likely to kill other people in accidents. That’s not an opinion. That’s just a fact that I know. My opinion is that people who are more likely to crash should have to drive smaller vehicles to keep others safe.
