Potential property/ownership dispute (puppy)

On June 18th, we agreed to temporarily foster an 8 week old golden retriever. It was supposed to be 2 days at the time. The original owner stated she had an apartment lined up and would be able to take her from there. When the day came to pick up the puppy, she stated she backed out of the lease. We agreed to continue fostering. After a week and a half of fostering, and her making no headway of finding a place of her own – we offered to keep her permanently. She agreed to this. I have text messages between all of us regarding this agreement as well as documents made, and signed by her, naming us as the owners. This was on 6/28/2025. Today, 7/4/2025 , she has asked for “joint custody” of the puppy. We told her no and now I’m anxious she is going to take legal action against us. Does she have a case with all of the proof we currently have of her relinquishing ownership to us?

There’s no such thing as “joint custody” for a puppy.

She could conceivably take you to small claims for the value of the dog. If you actually are served show up with your documents.
