Considering filing a case for promissory estoppel. I interviewed for a position. Told interviewer I was in 2nd round interviews for another job. Interviewer said their HR department was slow and to let me know if I was offered the other job.
Aug. 5 I was offered the other job. I contacted initial interviewer and he offered me the job. I asked about salary, he put in me touch with their HR department. They quoted me a salary. I told them I had more experience than was on my resume which warranted a higher starting salary.
8/6 I told interviewer I was accepting the position and waiting for final salary info. I turned down other job offer.
1 week later on 8/13 interviewer comes back and says they have gone with another candidate. Nothing about why or that the offer is being rescinded. Now I am unemployed and cannot find another position.
I have an email with the job offer, a voicemail from the interviewer offering me the position, and a potential starting salary email from HR. I also have the written job offer for the other position I turned down. Do I have a case for promissory estoppel? Is this something I would need a lawyer to file/litigate? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You did not settle on a negotiated salary, or approve the salary they offered. Which means you didn’t complete a legal agreement. There was no ‘consideration’ legally so there was no agreement. In this case consideration is compensation.
Unfortunately this will be hard to find someone to take your case and not worth the time or effort to litigate .
You now have a very uncomfortable lesson. Don’t turn down a job when you haven’t reached a start date with another.
