Like reality had just taken a rein-check. The ground wasn’t solid anymore. Everything EVERYTHING vibrated if not downright swayed and moved. And it’s SO INCREDIBLY LOUD!!!!! This grinding, so deep if goes right through your bones, is everywhere. I was in Japan and in a rural’ish area so thankfully no building damage and everyone was fine. One thing that really struck me was the very odd absolute silence a few seconds before it hit, like every bird, every insect, every creature just…stopped. And afterwards for about a minute, absolute silence. I also felt kind of seasick afterwards. Very, very disconcerting. Even my hosts were like, whoa, ok, that was a BIG one.
I was just in the Bangkok earthquake. Not a 9 but still was an interesting experience. One side effect that was a surprise is the dizziness the ground moving causes – it’s like you’ve been spun around. Made me very nauseous! Lasted for hours.
Knew someone who experienced an earthquake. He said the walls rippled like they were liquid and he couldn’t work out why – then he was told to run by the locals who were more used to it.

Best I can do is a 7.1 followed by a 6.2 aftershock in Queenstown, New Zealand. Whole lotta shaking going on.
Went to Doubtful Sound 6 weeks later for an overnight cruise. Boulders the size of 2 story houses had come off the mountain in a landslide.

There have been a total of 5, 9.0 earthquakes recorded.
The only ones redditors would likely have been alive for are either the
2004 Indian Ocean or
2011 Japan
The others happened in
1952 Russia
1960 Chile
1964 Alaska.
(While people from those could be on reddit the odds are unlikely)
