Reddit was supposed to be a place for open discussion – a platform where people from all walks of life could share ideas, challenge perspectives, and learn from each other. But the karma system has slowly eroded that ideal.
Instead of promoting thoughtful or challenging content, karma incentivizes conformity. People learn quickly that agreeing with the majority, making digestible surface-level comments, or joining bandwagons is the safest way to “win.” Meanwhile, nuanced or unpopular opinions – even if well-articulated and respectful – get buried.
It creates a culture where people are afraid to speak up unless they know it will be well-received. Not because they’re wrong, but because they don’t want to be downvoted into silence. The system doesn’t reward truth, honesty, or effort. It rewards timing, trend-following, and emotional pandering.
Even worse, karma becomes a credibility score. Users with less karma are often dismissed outright, no matter how valid their input is. We’ve replaced critical thinking with mob validation.
If Reddit truly values authentic discussion, maybe it’s time to reevaluate how we measure and display contribution. Because right now, the karma system isn’t just flawed – it’s actively shaping the platform into an echo chamber.

Reddit doesn’t value authentic discussion, it values $$$$$$.
I think your main mistake is that you think that Reddit gives a crap about an honest open discussion to be honest.lol. that has never been the case. Who cares about upvotes and down votes? If you say something just to go along with the flow, then you might as well not say anything because it’s not really your words.
