Rent to own contract with in laws

r/

Me and my have a rent to own contract with her parents. Part of the contract is we pay the remaining mortgage then buy the house for a total of 450k. The house had solar panels on before the agreement and now they are saying we have to pay for them. They owe 27k on the panels. I am willing to pay the bill if they take 27k off of the house or they keep paying now and I’ll buy the house for 450k. Can they make us pay for them? I know the whole situation was a bad idea but were stuck now.

If this was not discussed before the contract was signed (there is an actual legally binding, written contract, yes?), I would think that the previously installed solar system would legally be considered part of the “house.” If they overlooked that at the time, that is their error. They can’t make you pay for them, and they can’t remove them from the house.

You left out some important details, though. 1) How much remains on the mortgage, what is the interest rate, and how much are the monthly payments? We can’t know how much you are “paying” for the house in total without knowing that. 2) What is the current fair-market value of the property?
