I said what I said.
I think restaurants that refuse to split checks more than a 5 ways are just being lazy and incompetent. It shouldn’t matter how many people are in your group. It shouldn’t matter that you physically chose to sit next to each other.
A common argument I hear is, “well you can just Zelle or Venmo each other and figure it out.” That is not my job ma’am. Why should I sit here fiddling with my calculator app to figure out how much gratuity and tax to bill each person for when you literally have a register that can do that and more.
Additionally, not every person can afford to drop $500 in one sitting. No, this doesn’t mean “they shouldn’t go out.” Since when is having 10x the amount of money you expected to spend ever been a factor when dining out? it’s a silly argument.
I honestly believe this “policy” just comes down to personal laziness and lack of organization. It needs to stop and we need to stop judging large parties for being rowdy or loud when they’re forced to split the bill.

Totally agree if you can seat a big group, you can split the check. Not that deep.
Dang it smells like poor in here
“I said what I said” never is a good argument.
Please ask to split the check BEFORE ordering when possible. It gets tough when 14 people suddenly need separate checks when it’s already been tallied up as a total.
Ive never understood why you can’t just get one person to pay and reimburse them or just send the money to them and they pay.
It’s not rocket science and easier that the server having to deal with all that BS
Or pick somewhere to eat where you can all order separately.
People share items especially appetizers in large groups. Going back to break those out to specific would be extremely time consuming. Zelle each other, they aren’t responsible for your group having drama lmao
If you say it before you order, usually no problem. Also maybe carry cash
It’s more energy than it’s worth for servers if they have multiple tables. People will move chairs, split an appetizer 11 ways and then get upset the bill takes 15 minutes to split and check. They’ll argue over who had what and what percentage of one item should be split.
As long as you know when you sit down I dont see the issue
With modern POS systems, this is rarely an issue anymore. I haven’t had a restaurant bristle about splitting checks in years.
Only exception is if the group is large enough that you’re working with the events/catering manager. Then they’re going to want to create a single invoice, but you can certainly ask them to bill multiple credit cards. (We cohosted an event recently with 2 other companies and had no issue splitting payment across different cards.)
Well, yeah. They can very well split the checks. They just don’t want to. The server just completely sucks nine times out of ten in this situation because they are guaranteed a tip.
On top of understaffing to where running several cards is a problem (tables needing service). They don’t want to get hit with multiple per-transaction credit card fees if they can avoid it. Let the consumers eat those as they send money to each other.
That said, it is no different than if 16 singles came in and they paid the TX fee and whatever percentage for each of them.
If it’s that big of an issue figure out before choosing that restaurant whether they can accommodate.
Sure, but as guests it’s your duty to inquire about the split check policy and tell your server before you order, not after and only hoping their policy can accommodate you.
You think restaurants are people?
