I was at a vegan joint that added a 5% charge for servers (not the tip) to keep prices down. You just increased prices on the backend. It’s horseshit. If you need to increase prices bc expenses went up just do that. Don’t try and trick folks with sneaky fees.
Also there’s no proof any of that 5% goes to servers. It’s not required by law to.

That’s crazy, I haven’t seen that personally
Did they tell you when you ordered that it was there or was it added to the receipt afterwards?
Hell yes, I’m with you 100% on this. That kind of shady business practice needs to be called out more. It’s marketing manipulation, plain and simple. These places are banking on people being too distracted or too polite to question it. If your avocado toast now costs 5% more, just fucking say that. Don’t slap some virtue-signalling bullshit about “supporting our team” and expect people not to notice it’s just a stealth tax.
It’s like the resort fee scam hotels pull. You book a room for $150 and end up paying $200 because of “amenity fees.” It’s the same energy, greedy and manipulative. Just fucking charge what you need to charge and let people make informed choices.
I just saw this at a place i went to… I agree so I guess that’s a down vote.
just raise your prices. don’t bait and switch me.
What a scalding hot take.
As soon as you tell me you’re charging me extra so you can pay your servers’ wages, I stop tipping. Clearly you are paying your servers well, if you need to charge me more to do it.
