I just moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and began renting a property through a company. This may be irrelevant but when I arrived (3pm), they were not able to get me into the house because the code had expired. After several grueling hours on the phone telling me that it was impossible for me to take possession of the home that day, the irl manager called and got me inside at 1am. This was late May.
To my horror, upon entry, I was greeted by 4 dead American cockroaches. I left immediately, did not move any of my things inside and went to stay with my mom. The following day after many apologies from management, they assured me an exterminator would treat the issue and I could move in the following week. I documented it, went to clean the existing roaches, and moved my stuff to my moms while I waited.
I’ll cut to the chase, since then, I have been promised rent pay back until I was able to move in, and that they would ensure the home was inhabitable before I took possession of it. It’s July 23 now and I have never taken possession of the home. The sewage pipe was left open, which I believe is how they came in, but now when I go over to clean roaches and document it, I find 10-15 FRESH dead roaches every 3 days.
They are insisting I can live there since the roaches are dead. I don’t exactly buy that lol. Furthermore, I’ve never gotten rent “pay back” though I’m not even pushing for that now—I just want out of the house with no derogatory marks and my deposit. They are refusing both, insisting they need my deposit to relist the house. Again, I have never taken possession of the home and would be SOL if my mom didn’t live so close. I’m financially capable of sueing or whatever the hell I need to do, but I have no idea what I should even do if I should do anything.
I’ve documented it all, and woke up to find my home listed already on Zillow.
