So, as the title suggests, this will be a roommate horror story in which I hope to take them to small claims court. Anyway, I had found a roommate on short notice to split $2000 of rent almost down the middle. We had agreed over text and in person that they would pay $980 a month. (They didn’t pay it all and some kept over to the next month but I didn’t mind.) things changed and I had decided to move. Turned in my 2 months notice and the office dropped the bomb on me that they were never approved to be on the lease, but only approved as an occupant and as such will need to leave as well. I told them the situation and that we had both been blindsided however they decided to threaten me and accuse me of their misfortune. They went to the office the next day to ask if they are financially responsible and of course, they said no. They decided to stop paying rent as retaliation. (I guess.) again, I didn’t mind but things have changed. Knowing I am 100% responsible for the townhome rent and cleaning, they decided to leave the place a pigsty even after promising to clean up their end. I had to call out of work twice (which came to me missing out on around $1600-1900 on top of the $3200 they owed for rent.) to clean up the mess they left so I can get my deposit back. I have proof of their residence with pictures of their mail, screen shots of the note on my phone I used to keep track of rent which hadn’t been edited for 3 months (the last time they paid.) and of our conversation agreeing to rent terms. Should I pursue and can I the remainder of the rent they owe which is $3200?

Yes. You can sue them for unpaid rent and any costs you incurred for their failure to clean.
Obviously we don’t know what outcome you may see from that suit or what they may argue. That roommate is not obligated to pay landlord is not the same thing as their not being obligated to pay you under a rent sharing agreement.
