In online pissing contests, I often see comments calling those on the opposite side of the argument “low IQ” or “double-digit IQ”. I find the term “low IQ” to be a “low IQ” insult, actually. First of all, it’s almost always an ad hominem unless the argument being had is literally over a person’s IQ. Secondly, it’s overused and blasé. There are more creative, contextual, and less ableist ways to call someone stupid. Thirdly, IQ tests are antiquated and rarely used among the general population. In the U.S., for decades now, with rare exception, actual IQ tests are generally only performed to diagnose severe learning disabilities and developmental delays. It is exceptionally rare for an employer or a university/college to request one from applicants. They would just use SATs/ACTs/GREs/MCATs/LSATs or whatever board/licensing exam is appropriate for the position, not an IQ test. If someone claims to have a high IQ, I assume one of the following: a) they are lying and have never tested their IQ b) they HAVE had their IQ tested in school or in a psychiatric context to evaluate if they had a learning disability or developmental delay* c) they took a free online “IQ test” (which are known to be both inaccurate and over-flattering), or d) they paid out the ass for an actual IQ test, which IMO (and this is my unpopular opinion after all) seems silly, pompous, and cringe (when a person could prove their abilities by otherwise succeeding in their field). I also assume they are not very familiar with higher education and academia if they think IQ is a pertinent measure in this day and age.
* This is not to insult those with disabilities or developmental delays. I just included this to show the irony of those actually having taken an IQ test in a scholastic setting, likely being the very thing they insult

Saying something is cringe makes me cringe.
You missed one situation where people used to have their IQ evaluated. Gifted children when others want to determine just how gifted they are.
If someone says something that’s actually low IQ, then saying “low IQ” isn’t cringe. It’s only cringe if someone uses it as an insult.

And yet saying something is cringe is low IQ…
It’s a Trumpism. Of course it’s cringe.
But this whole discussion is derp.
How else would you describe the greater portion of MAGA people?
Saying that something is cringe is very low IQ
Op is right. Talking about IQ all the time is embrassing.
It is however funny to read “room temperature IQ” tossed around in a “heated” debate.
I’m sorry, but that’s just hilarious.
Using the word “cringe” feels like what a teenager would say, not an adult.
>They would just use SATs/ACTs/GREs/MCATs/LSATs or whatever board/licensing exam is appropriate for the position, not an IQ test.
SAT results correlate with IQ. I’m not sure about the others, though.
Saying something is cringe is low IQ.
Room temp IQ will always be funny. Don’t worry OP, no one will care that your SAT was 1050 once college admissions are over.
I think it’s fine. IQ is such an antiquated, semi retired metric anyways, it’s actually fitting as an alternative to harsh sayings that are ableist like the R-word, “slow,” etc..
I have an unreasonably high IQ and am around a lot of people with them. And it means very little. The science behind IQ is pretty flawed and in general, it is accepted that IQ is more a measurement of specific ability much like how one would indicate what condition a muscle is in at that moment.
However, it doesn’t indicate how flexible that muscle is or if anything else is going on with that person, which may skew actual usage or application of said IQ.
Throughout history, some of the best advancements and best problem solvers have been people with a decent IQ but high creativity.
That said as weird as it is for people to slap people in the face with it or use it the way you said is cringe, it is similarly weird for me that you’re hard on people who know their score. As though it is somehow their fault they got tested especially when testing normally starts when you are a child or teen, and it’s entirely in the hands of the state or your parents.
It’s also weird that you think people can’t be smart and disabled or have learning disabilities. I have 3 PhDs a lot of mental illness, and several learning disabilities. I mean yeah, it’s way harder to do school things, and I have to take like hours of extra work when I write research and go to publish, but you can be smart and have a good IQ and still be mentally disabled.
That is nothing to say about your blanket, those with disabilities… because someone in a wheelchair who doesn’t have a learning disability might be the smartest person alive,,e what’s stopping them? As for mental disorders… well high IQ goes hand in hand with a lot of them.
It’s also weird that you think a person shouldn’t appreciate something they are good at to the point that if it was brought up to them they might want to pay out the ass for the test because it meant something to them. Maybe they want to nurture one of the good things about them? Maybe they want the test to open doorways to certain hobbies or clubs that require it, because they want to talk to other people with their interests?
Like someone into art or sports often seeks out ways to validate their skills and practice? And want to seek out groups also into those things.
It is strange to me that you equate having a high IQ with being snooty when, for the most part, the people I know who have one have complicated lives, and it’s really only a small part of it, and often it’s been a burden or comes with a lot of stress.
,
IQ statements online started as an ironic Joke.
“That’s a 250IQ MOVE!!!!” Type shit.
Then because humor & irony is hard, people start to loose that part and it become a Serious statement, that just doesn’t really work.
Next you have the third layer, which has people PURPOSELY using it as an ad hominem attack because the person they are arguing with(in there eyes) isn’t worth having an actual argument with valid points. This can be cause because the other person is a dickhead, dug their heels in face of obvious loss, or because they stopped giving a shit about the conversation.
Disclaimer: this is not condoning anything, just explaining how this became a thing in my eyes.
Honestly, I have yet to meet a smart person who is super critical of anything considered an opinion, including relevancy of IQ.
You are allowed to have an opinion, once you realize so is everyone else, suddenly it’s ok when you disagree with people. Basically, having to say something is cringe also fits neatly into tearing into others’ opinions.
But, I don’t believe this is unpopular at all. Most people believe exactly what you said, therefore, downvote.
