Long story short this family member hasn’t been on his medication in 3-4 years, believes in crazy things like the government spying on him and gangstalking. He’s been involuntarily committed five times in the last year and we eventually just had to move because he kept getting released.
He recently stole the neighbor’s car, drove almost two hours away, and left his dog and cats in there for almost 3 weeks (dog passed). Somehow he made it back home and he was just involuntarily committed today.
My dad had vintage cars there that we weren’t able to tow away. The police are afraid of the family member and wouldn’t come out to assist.
Now the cars are destroyed and one is missing. My dad wants to sue of course but we’re worried that he’ll just get away with it like he has with everything else. Do you guys think there is a chance at all? He gets money from the military so he can definitely pay.

There’s no way to really answer this. Your dad can sue, your dad can win. I believe the small claims limit there is $10,000. The problem is collecting. Where is his money? If it’s in his mattress, that’s going to be more difficult to collect.
