security cameras should not be inside a house.

r/

i’ve noticed this trend in recent years. i could not rest comfortably in my home knowing i’m being filmed. it’s unsettling. i see it more with parents of little kids, but even then, it’s an invasion of privacy. of course it’s for safety and security, but how much do you really need? i think cameras should be on the outside of a house but definitely not the inside.

Mine are set to only run when nobody is home.

dude it’s not like there’s a security team watching the tapes😭😭

    Protecting your privacy from…. yourself?

Or like you think it’s an invasion of children’s privacy by the parents?

Or like an invasion of privacy of guests into the house?

  5. Feltcutemightswap Avatar

You hear stories of those cameras being hacked all the time

  6. yo-momma-joke-here Avatar

I don’t really care what another person does with their cameras or lack of cameras. So I am going to have to assume most people simply don’t care, which I am not sure if that makes your opinion unpopular or not, but I am certainly ambivalent about it.

  7. Uhhyt231 Avatar

    Doesn’t it matter if you’re
Being filmed if only you watch the tapes? Like how is it an invasion to tape yourself?

  8. Kellycatkitten Avatar

I feel fine being recorded in my own home, the only people who are going to see it are those who would see me doing stuff around the house regularly anyway.

  9. Ciprich Avatar

    Being filmed… by yourself? What

  10. Salmonman8869 Avatar

If you own a home you’re not staying at for long periods of time, it is a way to ensure (beyond an alarm/lock) that no one is inside.

Could also be when you are sleeping for a sense of security if you live alone.

For parents it may be that one works while the other is home and it’s nice to see your children/spouse while away.

I say all this only having a cat with cameras setup to watch her favorite sleeping spots when I’m away from home 🙂

  11. FlyPlane1287 Avatar

Who cares. Everyone has an iPhone or laptop. Big brother is always watching, has been your entire life.

  12. davidm2232 Avatar

Invasion of who’s privacy? I suppose if you live with a big group, it could be. But I live alone and the only one with access to my inside cameras is me.

  13. MidwesternDude2024 Avatar

Yall OP is clearly a teenager and his parents caught him either drinking, doing drugs, or having folks over when he wasn’t suppose to, and now he is mad. That’s the purpose of the post.

  14. Spirited-Humor-554 Avatar

Invasion of privacy by who? Are you afraid someone is else is watching you ?

  15. mxldevs Avatar

Well, if you don’t like their preference to have security cameras inside, you can ask them to move them or I guess you can move out…

  16. Sufficient-Author-96 Avatar

While I feel the same way, I have a family member with a chronic medical condition and a spouse who travels. He uses the system to check on her and make sure she’s ok. Otherwise, if something happened to her it could be hours before authorities are notified.

Not every use case fits your circumstances. Sometimes they’re a necessary evil.

  17. pinniped90 Avatar

Then…. don’t install a camera inside your house??

Or are you concerned that the CIA has gotten in and planted little cameras everywhere?

  18. Chaos_Theology Avatar

I have 5 for the front porch

    1 for the living room

    1 for the dining room

    2 for back porch

    1 in bedroom

    1 in spare bedroom

Alexa in every room joined to cam notifications.

Might put one in the attic.

I am not sure I would want any in my house. It is honestly kind of creepy. My mom has them and is constantly watching them from my house when my sister or dad are there. It’s just weird. I would like to add more outside of my home though.

  22. OliveFew2794 Avatar

fun fact this isn’t only issue in the house. somewhere set up already for watch us

  23. Hopeful_Morning_469 Avatar

I’ve thought the exact same thing, who records their living room or bedroom, so weird.

  24. Jerico_Hellden Avatar

Wow I think I actually found a real unpopular opinion that doesn’t violate the rules of the subreddit. If you want to see the importance of why security cameras should be in someone’s house look up Afroman police raid.

  25. Zestymonserellastick Avatar

Very depends on where. I have them on all 3 entances/doors. The other 3 are outside. I find it odd to have them in living spaces. Unless they can be turned off while people are home.

  26. Organic-Owl-201 Avatar

What about me I have it facing the front door and stairs on the inside of my home and one facing the back door but both internally. I agree having them where people are is creepy but having them on front and back door is not it’s just a safety precaution if anyone were toncomenin they’d have to come in through there and hopefully id get there faces and voices on my hd cameras. What do you think?

  27. Junior-Order-5815 Avatar

Both times I’ve seen cameras inside a house for “kids safety”, it was primarily used to leave the kids alone at home/ lock them in htier room and still be able to say you were watching them.

  28. hooahhhhhhh Avatar

    It’s weird af I agree

  29. MortemPerPectus Avatar

I think it’s fine to put them up in your own home, it’s for your security and you never know when those cameras might come in handy (if you get robbed), though I would keep it to what others have said so they don’t get hacked.

But of course I wouldn’t ever do in a bathroom or bedroom even in my own home, probably just main areas.

  30. TheFoxsWeddingTarot Avatar

100% agree. Any interior device with a camera is physically covered.

  31. TheTimelessOne026 Avatar

I understand how hacking can happen or how you can access them pretty easy but I also remember videos that allowed people to know people were inside of their homes at times. If you know you know. But ya. They definitely have a place.

  32. SHIT_WTF Avatar

That’s the difference between a security-related system and a surveillance system.

  33. eljyon Avatar

I only have it to make sure my pets aren’t getting into shenanigans… which they always are

  34. vainblossom249 Avatar

We have a baby monitor in our daughters nursery.

I had someone argue I wasn’t giving her privacy. So feel like this is a very anti-parent take.

  35. theneonviking Avatar

Security cameras do not belong in bedrooms of children. The rest, eh it’s up to you. I like being able to monitor my door for packages or to be able to answer the doorbell no matter where I’m at to say no thank you please leave. If you don’t want the risk of someone stealing video of you punching beef in your bedroom don’t install it, but honestly if you just regularly make sure you’re not using dogass network security, most people aren’t trying to break into your WiFi, especially not if they don’t know you have cameras.

  36. osolomoe Avatar

I agree it is soooo weird!! Outside the house I understand but inside is too much. Super creepy honestly.

  37. Fancy_Environment133 Avatar

Our society has turned into a bunch of insecure people living in fear. Their answer will always be “ what if or in case something happens”

  38. senpaistealerx Avatar

people say shit like this until they needed security cameras in their house. not too long ago a young girl murdered her mother and it was all caught on video/audio. without it, she may not have been caught. do you know how many break ins there are every year? also, these cameras aren’t usually in areas meant to be private but in communal spaces and entry ways.

  39. Far_Afternoon7122 Avatar

I had them in the past when I was in potential physical danger and I wanted to document who killed me if they came inside my house and killed me! But I have left them now and it’s super helpful because if I lose something, I just roll the cameras back and look for it lol

  40. Fun-River-3521 Avatar

I agree especially if someone is going to be fucked at a house I wouldn’t feel comfortable either lol

  41. mashed-_-potato Avatar

Do you consider it to be an invasion of privacy to use a baby monitor while my 6 month old sleeps?

  42. Feisty-Slip-5219 Avatar

Absolutely agree. Where’s the privacy? I don’t visit my friends if they have them.

  43. Fancy_Environment133 Avatar

I don’t even have them set up outside of my home. I don’t live in fear.

  44. keiisobeiiso Avatar

Idk, just sounds like op never lived in an area that had high crime rates. I for sure needed cameras in my childhood home.

If theres a home intruder, domestic violence, what if your house burns down, but because you had security cameras inside, youre able to get insured for all the property you lost?

You dont need cameras in bedrooms or bathrooms. Just the general living spaces, backyard, or by the front door.

  45. MosquitoHiccup Avatar

My best friend got a security camera for the inside of the house for the sole purpose of watching her cats & dog while they’re away. Her and her boyfriend both have access to it on their phone.

Her boyfriend was gone one weekend and I was over at her house, just us two having a girls night (which her boyfriend knew about), and I had this gut feeling that he was watching us so I purposely “accidentally put a box” in front of the camera to see what would happen.

Guess who got yelled at for being secretive. Yup, she did.

  46. Cleercutter Avatar

We have two in common areas. One by the front door that covers all the windows on the interior as well as the back door. Another in the basement, again, covering just common areas/windows. One more in the garage. We have a special needs family member so if anything ever happens, we know what happened. Also, 6 exterior cameras. Everything is isolated on its own backup power source, server, and our whole network has VPNs setup. We live here and it doesn’t bother us. Just don’t go ballsack swaying

  47. FlameStaag Avatar

This isn’t unpopular outside of the US honestly. It’s pretty weird.

  48. yaaaaaarrrrrgggg Avatar

Even immediately outside the house is creepy! The landlord just installed one where my family and I walk 10-12 times a day, without asking me of course, so I have switched to using an umbrella every time I have to be surveiled.
