Serious question: does anyone understand why we suddenly decided that Canada was our enemy?

r/

I can’t, for the life of me, understand why we would suddenly decide that Canada is our enemy. I’d like to believe that most Americans are not on board with this, but then why are we not speaking out? This is FAR from okay.

There’s been a subset of libertarians nationalists that get offended that other countries don’t like our lax food safety laws, so places like the EU Australia and Canada won’t take our milk, beef and pork. The fact that the repeatedly say they will take our produce if we raise it and processes it up to their standards in a verifiable way , doesn’t seem to penetrate the imagination of these anti regulatory zealots.

So, we started a trade war to try to force them to take our surplus diseased beef pork and dairy, and they thought about it and said “Ew, no”

Well it was said that canada is ripping off America for billions…. but if you take away the energy trade surplus then America is winning the trade advantage….. but because canada has an abundance of excess energy they sell it to the usa, also canada supplies a massive chunk of oil and gas to the usa, and retooling the refineries isn’t cheap and shareholders aren’t down for that right now. So since the cdn dollar makes it very financially profitable to buy from them corporations are very happy to buy canadian for huge profits. Isn’t that what people want is massive profits??

I actually think this has been a talking point with conservatives for a long time. I remember my aunt saying something negative about Canada a long time ago. I was like 14 or something (I’m 26 now). And I basically had the same reaction as most people on here are having now with what’s going on now. And you know, I am not really political because I don’t research a lot of things to a t. But, there’s kind of this tone that she had and I also sense that in people’s responses against Canada today, where it’s like disgust. Like they are terrible neighbors (someone actually said that on here). And it’s like, not giving us the fairest deal on tariffs or trade (again, can’t confirm, that’s just what some people have said) is very very vastly different from being the worst neighbors ever. I don’t understand how anyone can say that about Canada. Like they could be Russia and we could be Ukraine. But to like pressure them into joining the US and crazy stuff, I mean talk about negotiating better deals if that’s what you want, don’t demonize them.

  32. Rabbit_Brave Avatar

The current administration in the US works within a framework that divides the world (outside the US) along different lines to previous administrations. It’s not that these lines necessarily pop in or out of existence. They are mostly always there. It’s just a matter of which ones are (in different contexts) deemed significant, have higher priority, and are used to inform decision making.

The previous framework (used by both Democrats and Republicans in global affairs) typically divided the world along lines such as whether or not a society/group is democratic, supports free speech, supports free trade, etc. Not necessarily without some amount of hypocrisy, mind you.

    The current administration:

    • is highly nationalistic (the US against the world, rah rah), and
    • prioritises the left/right, liberal/conservative divide, even in global affairs.

This is the framework dividing Democrats from Republicans within the US, now being applied to foreign affairs.

Most of the US’ allies are either more progressive or more left than it and so find themselves losing points with the current administration, while foreign conservative and right groups/societies find themselves gaining points.

One sided trade practices. Canada basically acts as a funnel for ccp steel and other goods to bypass the tariffs they’d incur coming direct. They’re also prone to one sided protectionist policies for home industries.

  37. LissyVee Avatar

Here’s the goss that I’ve heard. With climate change, the polar ice caps are receding and rare earth minerals are becoming ‘available’ to mine. The countries that can access them and secure mining rights will reap in the big bucks like there’s no tomorrow. The countries that border this region and have immediate access are….wait for it….. Russia, Greenland and Canada. If the Trumpster can annexe Greenland and Canada, him and his BFF Putin will have the whole shebang in their pockets.

All of this ‘Governor of Canada’ and talk about ‘we really need Greenland and I think we’re just going to take it ‘ bullshit is just pure economic greed. I think the tariffs against Canada are an attempt to bring the country to its knees and beg DT to take them please and spare them more economic angst and terror. Unfortunately he’s either not as stupid as we’d like to think or he has some very Machiavellian advisors. Thankfully, Canadians are pulling together on resisting.

  43. Sandgroper343 Avatar

All decisions lead to Putin. Canada’s potential annexation is Trumps Ukraine. If America has territorial ambitions it validates Russia’s. As does the desire to take Greenland and Panama. Vlad is whispering in Donnie’s ear. “If we can do it, so can you”. It feeds Trumps ego and Russia gets to do what it wants. Trump is an asset. His job is to bring the US down and allow Russia to expand. Putin and China are playing the long game. They use the system from the inside.

Didn’t you hear? Our overly friendly neighbors are actually EVIL drug lords! Twirling their mustaches and flooding America with Fentanyl. /s

Actually they’re not our enemy… It’d just be really beneficial to invade, I mean “annex” them (Wink) until they see how Great America is and how they’d make a great 51st state. We’ve no plans for dominating other countries of course…/s

Whatever the reason running through Trump’s head, (which seems to never be consistent) it’s a stupid idea. Canada has been and should continue to be one of our closest allies and friends. We’re being the stupid asshole enemy here.

Trump’s interest in Canada and Greenland is clear evidence that Republican leaders do accept climate change as fact. Rather than doing something to prevent it, they would prefer to position themselves to be kings in a dying world.

They want to secure the Northwest Passage, the natural resources that will be easily exploited in a warming arctic, and territory to move to when climate change makes places like Houston, Washington and Phoenix unlivable.

In their zero-sum way of thinking, they are afraid if they don’t secure more of the arctic for the US, China or the EU will be able to somehow win the climate change game. The irony, of course, is that the actions they are taking are now are going to make Canada and Greenland create closer ties with everyone except the US.

The liberals on here will neatly articulate “orange man bad”, the real story is that illegal immigration was starting to take hold on the northern border, and the cartels are big business.
