I assume this comes from a combination of a collective action problem and just following norms without understand that the norms don’t exist.
However the quality of their journalism would only go up if they simply stopped going to the White House briefings. She’s not going say anything that you can’t get from watching Tim Pool, Jesse Watters and Ben Shapiro every day.
Why continue to get a tool for conservatives? Instead Just stop going. Leave the job to the court jesters in courtiers until something changes.

They should stop repeating White House press briefings and Xitter bullshit, and start doing actual journalism.
If the White House won’t respect the press or their profession, the press should not give them any regard in return.
Neither should the press continue to give the White House the incredible privilege of giving them the first chance to respond to any story via a press briefing. The White House needs to earn that privilege back by providing newsworthy briefings that answer hard questions.
If they won’t do that, don’t bother attending or helping the administration promote its narratives.
How would they report what’s happening in the White House? I don’t trust Tim Pool to report anything.

That sounds like a solid argument to keep real journalists in the pool. I wouldn’t want those guys to be a necessary conduit for news.
Plus, removing journalists would mean that the WH would never have to answer any kind of hostile question, however nonsensically.
Trump got caught on a hot mic saying he wanted to deport nationals.
Imagine if it was only Pro Trump news sources there, we may never have heard about it.

Some of the biggest stories about Trump and the fascist descent of the Republican Party have come from actual journalists asking them questions they likely wouldn’t have been asked otherwise. The story about Trump ignoring the SCOTUS order to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been bolstered by the fact that people like Kaitlan Collins asked Trump and Bukele if they were going to follow the order, and they outright said they weren’t. Them openly stating their fascist intentions in broad daylight is valuable to us as a resistance movement because it paints a more convincing picture to people we need to move than if they just quietly ignored it. That type of thing doesn’t happen but for actual journalists pressing the administration. I’m pretty sure that question alone extended the news cycle on this story by at least another day, which is good. Tim Pool’s team would never ask a question that forces the administration to outright say “yeah we’re going to ignore due process and cause a constitutional crisis by ignoring the other branches” in the way actual journalists have been doing.
The other thing I’d wonder is what would the White House Press Correspondents be doing with their time otherwise? I don’t have an answer to this personally, but this is the real question when it comes to opportunity cost vs opportunity benefit. My hunch is that what they could be doing otherwise is probably less valuable, but maybe that’s not true.
The argument against mine is probably that Trump says fascist things all the time and it doesn’t matter to people, but I think when we look back historically, it’s good that we have such an overwhelming amount of documentation of people stating their intentions as they do things. We know Hitler hated Jews because he was always very open about it and never tried to hide it. Us knowing that is good information for today about a variety of topics. People in the future knowing that Trump was not at all shy about breaking the law could be valuable for them.
But yeah I’m not necessarily married to the idea of the press still attending the briefings, but I lean that it’s better than them not doing it.
I would still send someone to record it. But there is no point in asking any questions.
I genuinely do not believe that the White House press briefing has any value during the Trump administration. The only answers anyone gets to questions are just complete bullshit or lies.
100% they should keep going. The fact that the White House is retaliating against wire services is a demonstration of their value.
The seats will be filled, whether they go or not. Do you want to see who the White House chooses if suddenly there are a bunch of extra spaces for new press?
We know that Karoline Leavitt is going to lie and say ridiculous things. But at least she has to lie about things that are uncomfortable for her. And they will trip her up and fluster her and she will make mistakes and give away more than she means to.
Plus, you don’t want to see the questions that get asked by the MAGA “reporters.” I saw one the other day, wearing a cocktail dress, tons of makeup, etc. and she asked a question that started with thirty seconds of praise for the Trump administration before asking a total softball on a different topic.
If journalists abandon the room to these people, it will still look like a press conference… but it will be entirely a propaganda show.
Access to the Press Briefing is only one component of having access to the White House. These journalists also have access to a bullpen where they can work in the building, and can have meetings and casual conversations with administration employees and White House guests.
Fox News heavily covers the Press Briefings (which they also did under Biden so they could hate-watch) more extensively than CNN or MSNBC, who rarely broadcast it live under any president.
