Should I file a police report?

I broke up with my BF (both in our 40’s, me single, him in the midst of a divorce) in March. We live in a small town so I’m surprised I haven’t run into him at all since then. I know he immediately had a new GF as she and I have a mutual friend.

Last year, I brought him to an important event to me where he met several of my close friends. The event spans a weekend. He hated every minute of it, got drunk and very high on many substances, and threatened violence. Afterwards, he told me he would never go back, and if I wanted to go back he would be done with me.

That weekend came around again, and we haven’t seen or spoken to each other since our breakup. On the first day, I ran into him. He was staying mere feet away from me and my friends. He then ran into us or made his presence known more than once a day the whole time. This event is huge, more people there than in our town.

So my question: should I consider legal action for stalking? My friends and I were scared by his close presence given the prior year. I’m now scared that I haven’t “seen” him in town because he’s been behind me in the shadows. My friends think I should file a police report. I don’t want to ruffle feathers unnecessarily. Thoughts?

I think we need more context; all this looks speculative based on your post. Have you had interactions with him outside of this event since March? What is making his presence known to you? Did he talk to you? Follow you? I think you have a right to your emotions, but if you haven’t seen him since March, maybe it was just bad timing.

For clarity: You saw your ex-boyfriend one time(or more, what does “made his presence known” mean) at a large public event. Did he threaten you in any way?

That wouldn’t be stalking in either California or Washington. He went to the event because his new girlfriend wanted to go. The police aren’t going to take a report that someone was at big camping event and might be in the shadows back in town.
