I (27M) recently went on a trip for my work buddy’s 25th birthday. There were 8 guys total and we went to an AirBnB near Lake Erie. My buddy really likes riding jet skis, so the organizer of the party (another dude that my buddy knew in college) decided to rent jet skis for us for the weekend.
Problem is that I don’t like jet skis and have never ridden or driven one before. So had the organizer asked all of us if we wanted to rent jet skis, I would have politely declined. But he didn’t ask anyone before he put down the deposit. Instead, he just sends a message to the group chat a few days before we leave on the trip saying he has rented the jet skis and everything is done.
Me and one other guy ended up responding in the group chat and saying we didn’t plan to join the jet skis excursion. The other guy mentioned the deposit and how we would have to figure that out, but no further discussion was had. But everyone else was fine that we were going to sit out and didn’t say anything else.
Fast forward to now, we’re back from the trip, and they all went on the jet skis and had a blast. I and the other guy sat out like we told them we would. Now the organizer is asking everyone (including me and the other guy) for $50 each to cover the deposit.
I don’t want to pay because the organizer didn’t ask us first if we wanted to rent the jet skis, and I didn’t go, so I don’t want to pay for something I didn’t do or want. But by not paying, I’m making the other guys who did go on the jet skis pay a greater amount/ratio to cover me. I don’t want to be a jerk, but is there a way to avoid paying the $50??

I would just tell them the truth. “We had no interest in the jetski excursion, and we were not told in advance. We do not think its fair that we should be paying for someone else’s excursion”
