Should I tell my dad that I smoke?

r/

I am underage, both of my parents smoke, I always witnessed it, always had a slight interest in it but never actually gave in, not until this year bc of stress and other things. I live w my dad, my stepmother and her child. Basically, my dad says that if I ever start to do anything like that, he won’t get mad, but js wants to know the truth. And I would tell him, but a few months ago, I told them that I drink energy drinks (which is harmful but totally legal) and he didn’t really mind but my stepmother reacted in a rlly strong way and I even overheard her say smth about tracking my phone w GPS, sending really limited money so that it’s not enough for an energy drink and even smth about death. My dad scolded me the day after w a whole different reaction. I really want to tell my dad bc I don’t wanna lie or keep away things from him but I can’t rlly be sure ab his words rn and feel guilty for not telling him but terrified of doing so

No, you shouldn’t tell him. You should stop smoking. It’s god awful for you, expensive, and the more you do it the harder it is to quit. It’s also illegal as you are underage.

Tell him, if he gets mad at you tell him that being constantly exposed to smoke through secondhand smoking is just as harmful(or even more) than regular smoking.

Ok, first, please stop smoking now while you still can. It will hurt your wallet, your body, and limit your future friend group. But you know all that already.

Your situation is tough. Your dad told you to tell him things, but you were punished for doing so.

Maybe tell him, but ask him not to tell your stepmother if he really wants you to keep telling him things.

Just quit and don’t bring it up.

    I smoked 17-33. It’s gross.

Okay, so a lot to unpack here.

First…: your Dad is clearly trying to understand what’s going on and how he can help. And your stepmom is worried about your health.

It’s awesome that you want to be truthful with your Dad, and he’s giving you safe space assurances. Many parents don’t.

As a Dad (of adult offspring), I also worry about your health. My kids all smoked briefly, and they learned how it affects the body by watching their grandfather slowly suffocate to death from COPD. And they quit. My kids learned about healthy eating and the impact megadoses of caffeine and sugar have on the body, and don’t do that either.

Whatever you decide : stay safe, live in moderation, and let your parents worry about you and advise you. Open discussions are always better!

Try to quit smoking. It’s not a good habit, it’ll ruin your lungs and skin, age you prematurity, and costs a fortune. I quit 4 years ago and will never go back. Over my lifetime I probably spent $20,000 on cigarettes and vapes

No but you need to quit ASAP. How are you getting cigarettes?
