Someone from college owes me $1200

r/

Location: Oklahoma, USA

Hello there, an ex-friend in college constantly was asking for money, repairs, etc. for 2 semesters. After all is said and done, he owed me $1205 by Jun 1st, which he agreed to. It is now July 6th, $0 have been sent my way, and he is claiming to be in Virginia with a newborn child.

How do i get a judgement on this, and can i have interest added on the judgement based on the verbal agreement of paying it off by Jun 1st?

File a small claims suit in his Virginia county. Have him served. Attend the hearing in person or virtually. Win a judgement. Get a writ of garnishment for his wages.

It is early in the morning of July 6, 2025. Your debtor’s payment is overdue by over a month.

If you have a specific agreement to charge interest on the past-due amount, you can add pre-judgement interest up to the day of the bench trial. You cannot select a presumed or default pre-judgment interest rate based on payment deadline.

Post-judgement interest in Virginia is 6% annually unless there is an underlying contract for a different amount.

While $1205 is not a trivial amount of money, in my opinion the hassle and expense of litigation far from home, and the very low chance of collection, make it not practical to sue.
