Spectrum mailed me a router, can I dispose of it?

r/

Location: Rural Maine

Facts:

Spectrum (local internet service provider) bought out my current ISP (beeline).

I am currently using and paying for my services via beeline. I had no idea anything was going on until a large box (assuming router) was left at my home via FedEx while I was at work. Said box was labeled “Spectrum” and was addressed to me. Along with the package was a pamphlet with a method to activate my new account and how to install the router they mailed. (Box has not been opened)

I have not agreed to, or even spoken to spectrum. I want nothing to do with them and have since switched providers. I have also canceled my current service with beeline, which was still an active account providing service via beeline.

Since I did not consent to, have knowledge of, or even speak to spectrum, am I obligated to return the router?

Addendum:
I know this is juvenile and pedantic (hehe) but I’ve had several very poor interactions with this company in the past both as a private customer and in a professional setting. The nearest FedEx or spectrum store or drop off is an hour drive away, and I work Monday- Friday 4am-7pm. My other less pretty approach is to just tell them their package will be on my porch until they come and get it.

It’s my understanding that I do not have any obligation to spectrum, only beeline. I have not agreed to any of their terms or conditions and should not be forced to go out of my way, taking time off work, just to return something I didn’t want or ask for.

Why am I seeking advice? Several of my friends and neighbors also received this router. Most have complained that the bill was nearly doubled with speeds reduced, and some that refused services were threatened with a $300(approx) bill for failing to return the equipment they were sent.

    Yes. You are.

And your understanding is wrong. When they bought out your current internet provider they also bought their business relationship/contract with you.
