Spelling paid as “payed” automatically puts you four rungs down the ladder

r/

I have no idea where this spelling came from but it’s not correct. Paid is such a simple and common word that getting it wrong just demonstrates inability to function.

Payed is a nautical term.

Google overview:

“The past tense of the verb “pay” is paid, not “payed”. “Paid” is the correct form when referring to giving money or something else as payment. “Payed” is a very rare word used primarily in a nautical context, referring to coating a boat with waterproof material or letting out a rope.”

Dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive. The meaning and spelling of a word is decided by the parties who use it. The reason why you speak english, and not germanic, and not indo-european, is because a group of people many years ago “got it wrong.” Using a word in a non “standard” way absolutely does not demonstrate an inability to function.

I see this misspelled a lot on reddit.

The suffix -ed is common for the past tense form of verbs.

    Walk

    Walk-ed

    Kill

    Kill-ed

    Paint

So people assuming the past tense of pay is payed isn’t indicative of an inability to function. It’s actually indicative of an ability to function through pattern recognition, although it is technically incorrect.

No one learn English around this guy.

A comma would have done nicely between “from” and “but” in your first sentence. You should work on your grammar before putting other people down for their spelling.

I have to agree with this one. This is just as bad as the idiots that use “bias” in place of “biased” and “past” in place of “passed”. They’re all on that same rung.

I’ve only done iut when I’m sufficiently tired enough not to care about my spelling. Otherwise I use the correct spelling.

    “demonstrates inability to function”

Only on reddit can you make a spelling mistake and have dudes come to this conclusion.

How is it an unpopular opinion though? Are most people in favor of spelling it this way? Or is it just a thing you occasionally notice?

That something I could not care less about. Lol
