[Spider-Man] Why did the serum drive Norman Osborn insane?

r/

So I did see the first two movies of the original Sam Raimi verse as basically what I wanted to do was look back at the movies to understand the storylines better as for instance, I didn’t understand what the experiment had in it that drove Norman into a crazed state.

It was a symptom. That’s why his scientist friend wanted to take the whole thing back to formula – one of their animal trials also resulted in violent insanity.

It’s suggested that the Serum was fundamentally flawed and that this result, while a rare possible outcome, was observed in their earlier clinical trials….hence that lead scientist wanting to scrap the whole thing.

The serum was flawed, he didn’t get approval to test it or make it better.

The workings of the serum aren’t explained in detail.

The physical effects would likely require significant hormonal alterations and possibly significant neurological changes to account for things like higher coordination and better reaction time. Hormone changes and brain damage (as a substitute for the changes) have been associated with major personality changes in the real world, quite often around emotional and impulse regulation.

He was also stressed and unstable enough to human trial himself against all practice and regulation BEFORE the drugs hit so his psyche wasn’t exactly at its most resilient.

Tldr; Super roids give super roid rage to an already unstable dude.

I always thought that part of what it did to you, the super strength, the resilience, the enormous reflexes, played part in giving you a god-complex. Maybe if you gave it to Steve Rogers, he’d be ok with it. But someone with an unstable personality like Norman, it is going to draw out his WORST instincts and amplify his darkness self.

Basically, he has PROOF of what he always suspected! He’s faster, stronger, and quicker than everyone else, and his MIND has proved it. He IS a supreme being!
